Drove the wagon today on Hakkas. Forgot how amazing Hakkas are on days like this. No TC or ABS activated at all driving at a brisk pace, passing everyone like Neo dodging bullets.

It's funny seeing all the people saying studded tires are pointless in Calgary on days like this. 0 issues in the Fiesta today, had a blast ripping away from lights and playing around.

I don't have studded and I haven't had any issues the past 2 days, have not activated ABS or TCS. If snow is really deep I find then my tires don't do as well (the tread is really good for ice but gets packed with snow if it's too deep), but studs don't really help there either and that's usually only a couple days a year where you get caught in 4-6" of fresh snow. If we had more days of sheer ice on the road, studs would be worth it but most of the time in the winter our roads are dry or clear (at least my routes are), just super cold. I drove on studs the whole time I was in Iceland and I didn't like the noise or the squirrley feeling. I think if I lived further North or in a different climate I would get them, but not Calgary.

I don’t think people have ever said they are pointless on days like this.

They say they are pointless on the other 95% of days that aren’t like this lol.

On average, studs are really useful here a combined 2 weeks every winter.

Having said that, I will never go back to studless. The grip is that much better - exactly when I need it to be. Compact snow and ice.

EDIT - snowfall warning was a dud .... got about 3cm in the SE last night.

Would studs make me go through tires faster or slower? I personally can’t do hakkas as I roast them in under a season

I don't think it'd make any difference in the tires lasting. You'd probably destroy the studs if you are spinning a bunch and then they are just normal tires after that basically. Rubber would wear just as fast.

I had a near miss of DF south today at around lunchtime. Im tootling along in the far left lane. All is well and the sun is shining.

A guy cuts in front of me and does not match the speed of the traffic flow. In that short time I am closing on his rear bumper, I brake hard and I can hardly stop... Im honking my horn like mad. I slow down hard...
The idiot just carries on like there is not a care in the world..

Weirdly enough, on the other side I see a car sideways covering the 3rd and 2nd lanes, just sitting there. He must have lost control in the 3rd lane, hit the barrier and stopped sideways. It must have just happened.

    Drive safe guys.

I bought a 2012 X1 28i a month ago, came with "Maxxis" brand winter tires with about 8/32nds left... needless to say I was a little worried, but they've been great so far, only slid once at a stop light where it was pure ice and it's been nice with the lower centre of gravity with awd and a slapomatic tranny so I can engine break.

Snowiest November since 1966, hell most of you hadn't even been conceived by 1966.
    Will fuck off, again.

I don’t post many things on Beyond at 1:33 in the morning. But I can see why it was important to you to post that.

I guess November isn't often snowy? My yard has less than two inches of snow depth even in sheltered shady areas. I guess let's have the snowiest December now too. Be nice if "out east" had a really cold winter. Like record breaking number of heating degree days. That'd be nice for a couple of reasons.

Preferably with a lack of trains full of hydrocarbons to keep them toasty

Well, I could feel some satisfaction if they were amply supplied or under supplied. Both work for me in different ways.

When you're old, your prostate can keep you up at night going back and forth from the bathroom.
