This has created a polarizing discussion in our home. I'm debating mounting a 65" TV on a stone wall.

Problem is you have to run lag bolts into the stone and run wires through the wood work to conceal them.

I prefer the look of a TV over the fire place (centered in the room) whereas my wife prefers us not to place it above the fireplace (or touch the stone/wood work).

Honestly at that point I’d leave it. No power. No hookups. Mounting flat against uneven cladding will never work right and you will destroy the cladding trying.

I've been told it's a white people thing to act like they don't watch TV, so instead they have sitting rooms with big fireplaces like the first pic and put the TVs upstairs and downstairs. If you have other dedicated areas for a TV, that seems to make sense.
Thats actually what we do - a real wood fireplace and slow jazz music on a rainy or snowy night. Zero cable/preprogrammed TV in the home. When we used to host dinners/get togethers people loved to sit in front of an actual fire.

The only "TVs" we have are actually just giant monitors in the basement that I use for gaming.

Power is in the wood mantel boxes on both sides of wall unit. Left side has coaxial and the right side only power.

The lag bolts would be (4) 1/2" holes in the stone - somewhere around 3.75" deep. To be honest that's the part I'm worried about but talked to two custom installers and they were not concerned and said it's commonly done.

I have a gas fireplace in my new place for the first time in my life. After about two weeks I turned the gas off to it and two years later still no use. Maybe if it was wood burning that would be a different story but i cant justify burning gas for no reason might as well go sit in front of a bbq.

Yeah I did this at my place and my cousin in laws. Super easy to do. Almost all infills come with this and its pretty standard.

We are going to "lose" the fireplaces in our rebuild. We might rough in some venting if it really matters for resale, but I never use them.

Contemplated TV over fireplace, but too much of a PITA to retro fit wiring... much easier this way:

Just need to get that ceiling redone and you might really have something.

I agree though if you can configure the TV some other way that’s good too, but notably I think it almost makes the tv MORE prominent in the room if people’s goal is to not make the TV the Center of attention.

Big fan of my wood burning fireplace. Also like the tv from the couches or from the kitchen.

Fireplace walls are tacky unless you have a country style home that suits a legit stone wall and wood burning setup or wood burning stove.

Never used a fireplace up until last year and I've been using it ever since when the temps drop. It keeps us toasty warm for the weekend late night movies. I like the mantle on top so you can put useless trinkets and pictures there but IMO it's too high for a TV so our tv is on another stand to the side. No wood though, that's just too much work and it's just gas for me.

We spent a pile of money installing a gas fireplace in our basement development. Now, we don't really use the basement more than one evening a week anyway, and that fireplace maybe ten times a year. Main floor gas fireplace gets used 3-4 times a week for 7 months a year.

DOn't think it's crucial to have a fireplace anywhere, and agree a tv above it looks kind of tacky, although sometimes it's the best of a bad choice.

Can't support a wood fireplace in a city house. Thumbs down.

I'm way too cheap to convert to gas. Couple friends paid upwards of 5k for the conversion.

Half the time that tv is on it's showing family pictures or playing music videos like it is 1997. The family pictures is great actually. With google photos you can have it auto tag people in the gallary you want to show and it is constantly refreshing with new pictures.

My wood burner has a gas line in it. Never had the balls to try it as it looks like it hasn’t had use for a couple decades ( found a few lego car tires shoved in the key hole and no key was left with the house either). Seems like a good option for getting stubborn logs ripping?

Fireplace in the office or bedroom? Perfect.
Fireplace in the living room? Nah.

I've had them all my life and rarely used them, maybe once ever few years. But I could see it being nice while doing WFH stuff.
