After 14,267 miles in Africa, I have driven into country number 14, Gabon!

Read the story of the border crossing here: http://theroadchoseme.com/into-gabon

Here is the hood of the Jeep now:

    Hey All,

I am pinching myself right now - for the second time in my life, I have driven a Jeep across the mighty Equator.
Last time was in Ecuador in the little TJ:

This time is in Gabon in the mighty JKUR:

I am excited to think about where I will be next time I cross the magical line on the ground!
You can read more here: http://theroadchoseme.com/the-equator-gabon

    ..

I also just uploaded the video of National Park Tai from Ivory Coast - this is why I slogged in that mud for so many days.
    Absolutely incredible!

    Adventure rolls on!

    Hi All,

After checking out the inspiring Albert Schweitzer Hospital, I am heading into the Loango National Park - it's world famous for surfing hippos and wild elephants that wade into the ocean.
    Just getting there is breathtaking!

Gabon is incredible! - again, I can't believe more people don't know/talk about it.

Gabon is shaping up to be everything I dreamed West Africa would be!!

I spent time in the spectacular Loango Lodge and National Park:

More pics and story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/loango-lod...-national-park

It thumped rain while I was there, which made getting out quite the adventure!

Also, I sat and watched this guy on the side of the road. Spectacular!

    More pics and story: http://theroadchoseme.com/out-of-loango

I can NOT believe more people don't talk about Gabon and how spectacular it is!

    Hey Everyone,

I am continuing to roam Gabon!

Wild camps like this continue to be normal:

Here in Gabon I continually see "street meat" for sale on the side of the road, including monkeys:

    Read More: http://theroadchoseme.com/glorious-gabon

After that I decided to cut right through the middle of the country, exploring deep into the jungle:

The trees are enormous, and occasionally the road descended into a mud pit... I continually wondered if I would make it through or be forced to turn back.

This place is amazing! As much as I am looking forward to Congo, I don't want to leave!

    Hi All,

I have made my way across the Central Highlands of Gabon, which continues to be stunning!

    See more pics here: http://theroadchoseme.com/gabon-highlands

And after 16,260 miles, I have driven into the Congo!
I have been seriously looking forward to this one for a long, long time. I can not wait to see what this country offers !

You can read about the crossing here: http://theroadchoseme.com/into-congo

Congo is turning out to be nothing at all like I expected!

The one and only refinery is shut down, so there is a massive gas and diesel shortage.
I bought from this guy on the side of the road for a 30% premium.

Read the full story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/northern-congo

Now I have driven the entire length of the country without a single gas station - over 560 miles.
Unfortunately, there is no gas in Brazzaville and the Jeep is completely empty.

    With what? an electric helicopter?

Probably just have to wait I suppose? Seems common for the Congo to have fuel shortages.

    Hey Everyone,

After a lot of asking around and phone calls, I eventually had 20 gallons of gas delivered to Hippocampe.
I paid three times the official price, just over $10 USD / gallon!

Read the whole story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/brazzaville-congo

After being denied the Angola visa in Brazzaville, I immedietaly jump in the Jeep and drive West, through a region of Congo recently attacked by anti-government rebels.

You can read that story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/to-dolice

Congo sure has been a wild ride!

Fingers crossed I can get the Angola visa somehow... I don't really want to drive across the DRC if I can help it.

    Hi all,

I spent some time around Pointe-Noire Congo, waiting aniously for the Angola visa.
Traditionally it's the hardest of all to get, with many, many people being denied in years gone by.

Happily the current president feels the country is "ready for tourists" and so things are getting easier in 2017.
There is no need for an invitation letter, and getting the one month visa is no problem, when it used to be just a 5-day transit visa.

You can read more about my time in Pointe-Noire here: http://theroadchoseme.com/pointe-noire-congo

Next up, I must cross The DRC.
Probably the least functioning and least safe country I will ever visit.

I did some heavy thinking and planning about which route I want to take, and I have decided to go looking for adventure.
You can read all about the options and my thinking here: http://theroadchoseme.com/congo-concludes

17,778 miles through 16 countries. The line on the hood continues to grow!

And so onwards, into The DRC!

    Hey Everyone,

It turns out just getting to the border of the Congo to leave can be an adventure!:

I wound up camping the night at the border post, for the first time in my life.
    Read the story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/leaving-co...-londela-kayes

From there the road got MUCH smaller and worse, and I wondered time and time again if I took a wrong turn.

After a lot of making it up and following my nose, I finally got to the International Border of the DRC, by far the smallest of the expedition so far!:

You can read about it here: http://theroadchoseme.com/into-the-drc

Already, the DRC feels like something completely different!

    Hey All,

The slog across The DRC has started in earnest!
After writing an entry date in my own passport with a pen, I am finally legal in the country!
The walking trail got interesting in a few places, and I just about tore one of the fenders right off.

    Read more here: http://theroadchoseme.com/across-the-drc-day-1

The scenery here in the DRC is absolutely stunning - completely unexpected!

Also, I finally found the "highway" that runs East/West across the country, more-or-less following the mighty Congo River.
I am heading East, aiming for a ferry to make the crossing.

    Read more here: http://theroadchoseme.com/across-the-drc-day-2

The DRC is like nowhere I have ever been before!

    Hey All,

The DRC continues to impress and continues to be a mud slog!

I arrive in the extremely famous Luozi looking to cross the ferry, though not before the nastiest "warlord" Policeman of the journey has his say!

    Read that story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/across-the-drc-day-3-luozi

After finally getting away from him, I make my way to the mighty Congo river, and cross on the most ramshackle ferry of my life!
This is the kind of adventure I will never forget as long as I live.

Read more and more photos of the crossing here: http://theroadchoseme.com/luozi-ferry-the-congo-river

Of course, the mud continues on the other side!

    Hey All,

The slog across the DRC continued, with - of course - more mud.

The starter was broken on this truck, and we tried the winch. It didn't stand a chance, so we couldn't help.
The guys were extremely thankful, and resumed waiting in the shade of a tree.

These are the kind of villages near the road:

    Full story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/across-the-drc-day-4

And after a solid bribery attempt and and stand off, I reach the border of Angola.
Mad Max was close, but got something seriously wrong. The amount of trash on the ground. Imagine it at least 2 feet deep, absolutely everywhere you can see.
Hundreds of people streaming across the border, scorching heat and humidity.
To top it all off, a guy walked right past with a full-sized fridge on his head!

More on the crossing here: http://theroadchoseme.com/into-angola

The DRC has been an adventure I will never forget, now it's time for Angola!
