It's going to get interesting when a parent without childcare has to choose between employment and leaving thier kids unattended for 9-10 hours a day. Probably okay if the kid is 15. Less reasonable if they are 5, or 2.
Financial Post has a great (weekly?) Employer/Employee relations/labour law article.

Pretty sure that a company has to accomodate child care/time due to circumstances like these is what the article said.

Was actually able to find it. Everyone should read Levitt's articles IMO, good for both employers and employees.

If that's who I think you're talking about, then that's the company I work for. I can confirm that WFH is one of the options they are looking at. There was an employee survey done and more than 75% of the company said they preferred to WFH. It will be at least a month before we're back in the office.
There was a blurb on the radio this morning about how a lot of businesses will start giving this option.

All I could think of was "What's stopping them from outsourcing at that point?"

Been there done that. My last company kept hiring overseas EPC's due to their lowest bid.

When we go to design reviews:
    "Does this line have EHT?"
    "What is that?"

There's only so much you can outsource. Partly due to people just not knowing what the heck they're doing (not putting EHT where it should be is a great example). Another is the simple fact that you need P.Eng to certify designs; good luck finding a pile of APEGA P.Eng's in China or India.

As of when I left the EPC industry (2016) they were already pushing the envelope with how much work could be delivered from offshore centers without sacrificing (too much) on quality, agility, etc etc.

    ^ This!!

We still outsource a lot, but there is a lot of "re-work" that needs to be done and they all need to be checked here. We might just be a bunch of checkers very soon.

For the employers/finance folks: Has anyone received their Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) funds yet?

We completed and filed our application April 27th and were told funds would be disbursed May 7th.

It's simple. Just tell an Albertan "you can either lose your job, or, go work in our Nanjing office stamping trash from our sweat shop".

It is the Gov't so I am thinking the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy will show up in 2022 and will only be given to Quebec

So a certain EPC that's run by the least gifted descendants of British prisoners is planning on leaving their people WFH for "months" to come and then transitioning entire departments worth of them to WFH forever. Saves more money by leasing less office space and "delivers new delivery of project deliveries while maintaining top quartile HaayChessEee" which is apparently how H-S-E is pronounced...

Fair dinkum. Not like your customers are looking for anything more than polished dog shit from a company that mandates about half the work to China, anyway.
I'm sure all these savings will be passed directly on to the custo... BwaahHaahaHaa! LoL!!!
Double saving. No need paying for office space and workplace safety cost is now offloaded to employees.

We didn't qualify for the 75% in March but we haven't seen the standard 10% either.

I think the Australians pronounce H like "hache" really bugs the shit out of me being a kiwi and all, I don't understand how an entire country can pronounce a letter differently than the entire planet.

Was playing poker with my VP last night when someone asked him if he could WFH permanently 1 day a week. The answer was sure in exchange for 80% salary
