MVP of the season Michael Masi. - He should read the rule books first.

F1 misses Charlie Whiting So badly.

No they didn't because they will be loosing track Position.
RBR had nothing to loose so they were able to gamble.

RBR got lucky. Pure and simple.

But I think on balance, Merc was far, far luckier this season than RBR.

The decision to not pit by Mercedes was based on the expectation that the FIA would follow their own rules. I don't fault them on strategy.

I don't know about the "spanked" part. RBR was more or less resigned to Hamilton winning with like 5 laps to go because, despite having the fresher tires, Max didn't have the pace to catch Hamilton.

Then the miracle that Horner was literally asking for on the commentary happened when they got the free pit stop with Latifi crashing and the odd unlapping decision. Unless Horner knew that Masi was of the mindset that, come hell or high water, the race was going to be decided by a racing lap, I don't think RBR's strategy was all that good. What they had were really good performances from Max and from Checo, who did a great job holding up Hamilton for awhile.
Mercedes has several opportunities to put new tires on and continue the pace delta. Lewis was without a doubt the paciest of them all. Mercedes went conservative on each opportunity.

Bringing Max back in with checo. Why didn't they attempt the tow yesterday? Where was the team play with bottas?

Rbr put themselves in a place to fight back.

Let me clarify, I am gutted for Lewis, but the man is gonna come back with a whole new car for next year and Mercedes is not going to drop the ball.

Let sleeping dogs lie and try again next year.

Can you imagine the kind of villain Toto will be if the championship was decided on a post race circumstance?

They didn’t pit because they’d have lost track position both times.

Yes, and track position is king. You don't put yourself in a position to have to overtake Max as the last races have shown.
The race should have ended under safety car had the rules been followed though.

Side comment. I cannot stand Rosberg. But today I really liked him. What an odd race.

Hamilton was up 12 seconds before the crash with 5 laps to go. If nothing else happened, he would've won. With the crash, the interpretation of the rule is that they wouldn't have been able to unlap AND finish with a racing lap. That's why they didn't pit during the Latifi SC: it would've cost them a place with no chance to get it back.

And I think they absolutely should protest something like this. It is way too big to let go of and I am sure even the most die hard Max fans will acknowledge that Max didn’t deserve the win today. If it was plain Lewis bad luck like a flat tire and Max capitalized on that or Max was just a better driver in general today or something like that then it’d be easier to accept. The fact that POS Masi makes rules on the fly is the messed up part.

At least everyone's fear that this race would be decided by the Stewards didn't come true. Instead it was decided by the Race Director.

While I am a fanatic about formula 1 and the technological development, the engineering tit for tat, at this point if they replaced the drivers with robots I think I'd enjoy it much more.

I can't stand the drama between drivers.

I concede that protesting the race is a no brainer. It's the optics of it for me, that makes me less than eager to wear my Mercedes kit.

So, let's be clear about the unlapping rule and how it applies here. Let me know if I have the rule wrong:

    - The rules stipulate that if cars are unlapping, they have to unlap and then go one more lap under the SC before racing can resume. Is that correct?
    - As lap 57 was ending under the safety car, the 4 or 5 backmarkers betweeen HAM and VER were told to unlap.
    - Lap 58 would be the unlapping lap
    - Lap 59 (hypothetically) is that lap after where the SC would come in
    - Lap 60 would be the next possible racing lap

    Is that right?

What does Merc want? The race to finish behind safety car?

I assume they want the rules to be followed so they can make decisions informed by the correct information.

Honestly. How many races this year have had Stewards or race control make race altering decisions? Seems like a pretty shit season for actual car racing to me. Great season for those who watch because of F1 drama queens tho.
