    Default Video Monitoring system

So I want to pre-wire the new build with cat6a to a whole bunch of locations for cameras. My cousin in Vancouver has an always on system (no idea what) that has a monitor in his kitchen that shows feeds from all his cameras. I don’t think I need always on, but I might want it.

I’ve been looking at UniFi Protect as it would seamless integrate into my network really well (UDMP, UniFi POE switches, etc). https://unifi-network.ui.com/camera-security

Nest looks compelling as well. I think it also integrates into HomeKit. While I am on the Apple ecosystem for many things, I haven’t setup HomeKit at all. I’m guessing I can get a 16 camera view with Nest to work on AppleTV, or can I?

Right now I have a cheap Wyze cam for the garage.

I will probably set up 6 cameras on the outside of the house, one in the garage and one probably inside somewhere.

What’s everyone’s experience? Anything better? I haven’t really looked at Lorex. Any good?

I have a couple buddies with the Arlo Pro packages, and they all swear by them. completely wireless and seem to be pretty good.

Wonder what the longevity of the battery is when it is -20. Wired and Wireless has pros and cons. I have the option to run power, so I don’t need completely wireless.

If you want to stay with in Unifi Ecosystem it doesn't support the Homekit integration natively.
You can integrate it with Home Bridge or Hoobs.
I am staying with in the Unifi Eco system. I have bought the cameras but haven't got around to install it yet. Probably a summer project for me.

You will find yourself extremely disappointed by nest. It does not natively integrate with HomeKit and won’t do what you desire. And it’s expensive af.

Google has given up on nest, tough to say why people buy their products anymore.

I’d go with Unifi protect or some other IP camera solution with local storage and monitoring.

Once you have protect setup they make a little Ethernet to HDMI dongle that will provide you with your camera dashboard you are looking for. I plan I transitioning everything to Unifi when I find the time/budget.

Honestly HomeKit is not that useful for video imo

If I had an opportunity like you to wire and design from scratch I would go with a Lorex 4K PoE system. Never used before personally but reviews are great and they seem like they have good support. Costco usually has deals on their packages throughout the year as well.

I had the Arlo pro. Awful battery life in the winter and wireless quality is generally poor if it's outside.

Unifi works way better if you have them wired up. I have over 10, including the one under the desk.

POE also has the benefit, combined with a UPS, of continuing to function if you lose power.

Not really a big deal in Calgary but a nice assurance. Power goes out and you lose nest entirely.

Cameras are also bandwidth heavy, and often spaced to far corners of signal strength, so offloading as much of that onto wires is only going to help keep your wireless ecosystem happy.

How Unifi compares to Lorex or other POE solution I don’t know, but it’s an ecosystem I am more familiar with.

Nest has a few pros, and a fuck ton of cons.

Pros: cheap 24/7 cloud storage (now), good ui to export specific clips, awesome doorbell product, good motion, people, and face detection, decent homekit integration.

Cons: no wired option WiFi only, no Poe support making wiring shitty, no more single view interface (did have it for Apple TV but they abandoned the app), iOS and web interface isn’t single view, have to scroll if you have more than 4 cameras. Need starling.io to integrate homekit (surprisingly seamless), owned by google so you know it’s going to randomly EOL at some point with no notice.

I dunno if I would use nest in a new build, but some of the pros are really great and used daily, and afaik isn’t as smooth with anyone else as nest. Man I sound like I’m in an abusive relationship with nest haha.

That’s pretty much how it’s goes with nest.

I’m just done defending them after owning 7 of their devices and slowly working that number down over time.

I'm running Unifi Protect right now. I can't imagine going with another option, especially if you already have the UDMP ready to go.

I much prefer the unifi doorbell to my old Ring. Setup and integration with your existing software makes things easy. Camera quality is really good. Local storage (no cloud service or sub needed, if that matters to you).

Only Con I have seen is the cost of the cameras....but that's fine. Buy once, cry once.

Thanks. Did you get the Viewport?

What happens when the door bell rings? is it like Ring?

Does the doorbell just act like another camera when nothings is happening?

I don't have the viewport - don't really need it.

When the doorbell rings, you get a notification on your phone, you can click it and it opens the app for you to do whatever. Similar to other doorbell apps, I guess.

And yes, the doorbell acts like a normal camera otherwise.

I know AvertX is a pretty solid system. IIRC it is not the cheapest, but it's good.

Recently purchased 3 camera Blink system from Amazon and pretty satisfied with the performance and integration with amazon alexa.
Two lithium AA batteries can last up to 2 years according to the website.

The price is compelling when you consider one 4K Unifi camera is the same price.

I least the Unifi cameras have a reasonable % of the camera face as a lens...

those lorex cameras look like they would be useless in the dark.

You guys dropping thousands on cameras so you can see someone checking door handles and crime. My wyze v3's work just fine and way cheaper. I can't see spending more and gaining the same outcomes.
Also my area has action almost nightly. But has slowed since the neighbour got pinched for beating up an old guy for his jacket.
Everyone on my street has cameras. We can clearly identify culprits but cps don't care much so I ask why add $900+ setups?

Completely agree, sounds like you should be saving those extra dollars to move out of the ghetto.
