And then seeing how little Simmons got moved for... why the Flames didn't get in on that, really puzzles me.

Read somewhere that Simmonds wouldn't waive his no trade for Calgary.
Simmonds' wife is 6.5 months pregnant. Philly is only an hour and a half flight away from Nashville. That's probably the biggest reason why he didn't waive for Calgary. I fully expect Simmonds to go back to Philly in the off-season anyways.

Stone is good, but he is not $9.5 mil/ season good... woof.

    Glad the flames bowed out.

I was all for acquiring Mark Stone because he fills a need and will put the Flames over the hump. I'm glad Treliving didn't give up Valimaki and precious cap space for Stone, who will be making the same as Nikita Kucherov!

Not sure if this should be a different thread but this has been a discussion around the NHL for the last couple of days.

    https://globalnews.ca/news/4971205/c...-cherry-jerks/

What’s your side? Don Cherry’s or the Hurricanes?
That is some of the dumbest stuff I've seen in professional sports. One of the reasons I gave up on football were some of the end-zone celebrations; ridiculously stupid.

I heard he didn't want to come to YYC because of the Canadian tax system. Also, i heard his Wife is pregnant and almost due.

Yah I didn't know all that about Simmons at all, but that makes much more sense now. Bummer because he would be a great addition. Hayes would also have been very nice, but Jets really stepped it up.

You can't use Kucherovs contract as a bench mark for anything, actually you can't with all the tampa bay contracts. Because of the tax system in florida stamkos/kuch make more than Tavares does in Toronto despite a ~2 million gap in salary.

Stone is putting up > point/game and is on pace for 38 goals this year while being on the worst team in the NHL. those numbers are typically 9+ million in todays NHL.

Either way I'm just glad Flames didn't trade one of the top young D for a short term rental. I predict this offseason is going to be very interesting for Treliving. He is going to have to move a few bodies to figure out the money issue.

Tre is a smart man and he does all his work in the Summer. Speaking of which, i can see Brodie being dealt in the Summer since he's gonna be UFA

Thats the going rate now. Stone is a good all around player who is built for the playoffs and his contract wont look so heavy in a few years when the cap is even higher.

Actually in the case of Stone, you can.

People act like even though the cap goes up $3-5 million a year salaries are going to stay the same. Less % of the cap hit than Vorachek contract.

woh woh... I had no clue that Vegas had no state tax on athletes!?!? wow.... that is huge. Can't believe I never read that.

Well that puts them in the same bracket as Florida/Texas for tax breaks in that case (except a bit more).

Okay so Typically you can't use Kuch/Stamkos. Between Tampa tax + the whole sacrifice a million or so to stay with the team

Big difference is Stone is a winger.

Majority of the big contracts are C or #1 dman, all much more valuable.
Stone, while an incredible player is being over paid ~$1mil/ season in my opinion

Signed for less % of the cap than Voracek.

People seem to think contract values won't go up with the cap going up for some stupid reason.

The cap has gone up $10 million in 3 years if the rumored $83 million for next year is correct.

I also think he will move Brodie for another asset and to make room for some of the younger defencemen.
