I spend a reasonable amount of time in the +15, and can't help but notice a staggeringly large number of guys that wear a golf shirt (like actual moisture wicking athletic shirt, often in a bright color) with dress pants and some kind of worn out dress shoes.

Anyone wear this ridiculous combo to work? If so, why?

Enlighten me.

Majority of guys I see around here wear dress shirts/pants, but I have noticed a bit of a trend with dress pant bottoms going higher and higher to show off the ankles and sometimes even above the ankles.

Worst. Trend. Ever. When I went and got my last pair of pants hemmed I told the dude that I didn't want that "too short flood pant" look. Apparently they call that the "downtown". Its horrendous.

For me, if I have a client meeting that day I wear dress pants and dress shirt (sometimes rolled up if the client is casual), but if I don't have any meetings or just meeting vendors then its jeans and a polo.

Side note, went for a meeting with a contractor. I showed up in dress pants, button up, dress shoes. He had a Batman T-shirt on... Man that young generation never heard of "dress for the job you want" i guess.

Maybe i'm a little too "new school" but if dressing in a suit vs golf shirt is the difference between getting a job or not then that company needs to re address their priorities.
The value I can add to that company/ team should be all that matters.

it looks especially bad when they are walking. you pretty much see their entire sock all the way up to like half of the shin. i will never understand how people think that looks good.

Oh man im sure ive broken every, faux pas bullshit dress code out there. Wrinkled dress shorts and a frumpy dress shirt tucked in or not, depending on how much crawling in a server room I have been doing.

I just have no fucks to give as a contractor - but I wont dress like a homeless person, and smell is very important.

I do wear a mid-range watch so that maybe helps offset the look a bit.... LOL

Growing up I would always look at the downtown people with envy as they would get to wear fancy suits everyday. As soon as I entered my field where not only is it the norm but in fact a requirement to suit-up when in court, it got fucking annoying real fast. Now I look forward to the days when I don't have court so I can dress casual. Be careful what you wish for right.

You're not "new school", you just (presumably) don't work in an industry where image matters. In your industry, that's great if you can identify a company you don't want to work for because they want you to dress up for an interview. My outlook is the opposite.

Like it or not, there are plenty of industries/companies where image matters.

edit: for clarity, I'd much rather work in the setting where you can dress for comfort. Wearing a suit every day sucks balls.

Dress however you want. I always get a kick out of hearing the more pretentious ladies at work talk about men in Canada don't dress up nice like men in Europe. Pffft, fuck off.
