So I'm trying to play warzone and my 8 year old build is starting to show its age. Ideally, I'd like to get another year out of it for ganing, and its still a great work station.

    i5 3570k
    8gb ram
    HD 7850
    850w psu

    Thoughts?
    Update,

Added 8 gb of ram and an RX580. Getting much closer to 60 fps on medium for Warzone now!

I'm using the factory overclock through my ASUS bios and when it's running at 4 ghz (1.25v) my core temps are hovering around 80-85C. Most previous games didn't have my cpu utilization at 100% for the entire duration, maybe blips here and there so I wasn't concerned. But for warzone it is literally running at 100% for the entire game. Is it ok to sustain those temps for my CPU or should I turn the processor down to 3.8 ghz? I have the stock cooler currently, I am ok with switching it to a coolermaster 212, but I have heard that I can easily damage my processor while I take my old one off..

    1. Stay the course, 85C is fine
    2. Turn it down to reduce temps to 75-80
    3. Install cooler and maintain / increase voltage
    4. add a case fan or two?

Nice. What PSU & GPU you got? I've got a Thermaltake SmartSeries 850w, and an MSi GTX 1080
I'm migrating my old system over to the new shell. It has a EVGA G2 850w and Gigabyte 1080. Looking back, the 850w is likely overkill. Running a 650w on my new system without issue.

1080P gaming is typically CPU limited, not GPU limited, so it's not unusual to see your CPU working overtime when gaming at those settings.

Factory "one click" over-clocks usually use way too much voltage (and subsequently higher temps) but 80-85C is really not bad if that's under load. Idle temps in the high 20's low 30's and load temps under 90C are pretty typical but if it's sustained, the lower the better. Under 80C is what a lot of people shoot for. The thermal cutoff for most CPUs is 100-105C. Up to you if you want to go down the road of a custom OC you can likely lower your temps further. Good thermal paste (and a proper application) between your CPU and cooler will also make a significant difference, if not already done. An aftermarket cooler will probably make the biggest difference as Intel's stock coolers are pretty terrible. If you picked something like a Noctua NH-D15 (or a 212 on the cheap) and used some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste I bet you would see a 10-15C reduction right there. Whatever cooler you buy just make sure it can clear your RAM.

I've swapped coolers many times, it's very easy and I've never damaged a CPU. There isn't really much to go wrong if you're gentle. Clean the old thermal paste off with 99% alcohol and a coffee filter (no lint). Apply the new paste (very thin, even layer) and tighten the new cooler down like you would a car tire - gradually and with opposite bolts. Watch someone do it on YouTube a few times to get your confidence up. The surface of your CPU's heat spreader and the contact plate on your cooler are not perfectly flat or uniform, even though they might appear to be, which is what the paste is for so you can maintain 100% contact for maximum thermal transfer. Paste degrades over time as well, so if your 3570K still has original paste it's probably not doing much these days.

If you already have 2-3 case fans (at least one intake and exhaust) I probably wouldn't bother adding more since your temps aren't even that bad as-is. If you add a big CPU cooler with large fans, it will also move a lot of air within your PC case and over your RAM/VRMs.

    Anyone looking for a GFX card? I'm selling my EVGA 1080TI FTW3 - $600.

Only ditching it because I'm running a 1080TI Mini instead in my SFFPC.

Just spent another $450 on another 32GB of ram, led strips and the command pro, just for the LEDs lol.

COVID is making me spend more cash than I ever would.

I haven’t even powered it up yet because I’m trying to stuff all the cabling in and make it a clean install.

I am going to migrate my older system into a SFFPC because zipdoa is my hero. My Gigabyte GTX 1080 Windforce OC 8GB ain't going to fit in the case. Rarely gamed. How much is this worth?

Finally booted. After I installing windows, I’ll have to trouble shoot a dead case fan. RGB is working, but not spinning.

nice, did you put RGB strips on the bottom too?

Yeah, stupid. $500 on memory that I don’t need. Probably could have gone with 4x8GB for the same effect.

The bottom of the three in front isn’t spinning. The connector could have gotten dislodged when I was trying to shove everything into the back.

Now I have to figure out the software. Guy at Memex told me iCue doesn’t play nice with others.

The PSU is using the same colours as the mobo.

I want to see how how your memory utilization can get. I only managed to hit 13GB trying really hard.

Those cables at the bottom would drive me nuts. Are those all the same fans or are the rear side/top ones different from the front ones?

Fuck, I used to think RGB lights were tacky/ricey, but with the idea I have of mounting this naked case on the wall in my office/den, I think it'd look dope with the lights off.

Maybe I'll just do RGB lights. Is everyone doing this on their builds nowadays?

there's only one cable on the bottom for the video card, the other cables you might be seeing are reflections in the glass.
but yeah once I upgrade my videocard I will rewire it more cleanly.

P3 case is coming today. I guess no SFFPC until the next upgrade.

lol, AMD are ricers and Intel are minimalists.
when I was running Intel from 2008 to 2020 I always had a closed computer case, going back to AMD revived the ricer in me, 2003-2008 AMD Athlon modding days with LEDS and antec yellow case with side window
