Default Smartphone Remote Start Suggestions for Land Rover 2015 LR2

I stopped by MSC (Mobile Solutions Calgary) as they had installed a couple of remote starters on my previous units. The experience wasn't great; they weren't sure whether they could install it on my vehicle and took my info for a callback but never called. They advised that ifthey could do it the bill would be around $1,000 and there would be a monthly fee.

Anyone know of remote starter compatibility for a 2015 LR2 and whether there is a smartphone option available that doesn't involve a monthly fee? I believe there was also a Beyonder who does car starter installations. Paging unknown installer!

I've located a few links for different units but would prefer some feedback from anyone with experience with these:

    http://start-x.org/

https://www.my-start.ca/Home.aspx (Appears to not be available in Alberta)

https://www.evo-start.ca/home (also apparently not available in Alberta)

The main solution that comes to mind from a cell phone standpoint is drone mobile and a compustar starter.

But definitely does not worth with all vehicles.

Are you wanting smart phone control from anywhere?

If you just want short range Bluetooth control there are lots of zero monthly fee options, but the range is very short. If you want true control from anywhere you will need cellular connection which means a SIM card and service plan. As far as I know there is no such thing as a zero fee cellular remote start

I was looking at one that I think the remote start fob could interface with your phone and send a signal via the 2 way transmitter but at that point you have the keys on you so there isn’t much reason to have smart phone control

No such thing as far as I'm aware. Any remote starter that can be activated by cell requires network data access and therefore a monthly fee.

That's the one that MSC tried to sell me for $1,000 if it was compatible. But they never confirmed.

My limited research turned up a few that worked on wifi as modules that could be added to an existing system.

I'd need my keys on me anyway as the car is push start. I just want to avoid another fob.

Yea that’s the thing though, to send the signal you’ll either need Bluetooth or cellular (I guess wifi options as well). Bluetooth or wifi isnt going to be useable except for at home really. Cellular is not an option if you don’t want a monthly fee

Cost on drone adds up, you need the drone module, the main starter mosule, plus potentially other bypass modules, plus labor for the install properly and programming the various systems to work together. 1,000 installed is high but not nessecarily out to lunch. Drone most definitely has a monthly fee, but then again so does any other cell based system (on new cars you are just paying for a few years up front).

I have also anecdotally known many people, including myself, who ended up with electrical problems after install. My FJ cruiser needed a new battery 4 months after installing my compustar starter, and my brother with a drone has his f150 in the shop every 6 months with electrical issues and dead batteries.

    Imho factory Starter or bust.

Yea that’s another problem. Anything cellular is going to put a decent additional draw on your battery. Not great if you’re not driving it daily.

I’m guessing this was your issue killramos? Battery gets drained down in the winter, battery freezes overnight and now you need a new battery

So what's the advantage to cellular starters?

You can start your car from an app on your cell phone. Lol

Maybe I'm too low class to understand the appeal. I figure my 2-way compustar with over 1km range is all I'd ever want.

Lol the range in mine was never ever even close to that good.

My buddy starts his ford from the basement of a classroom in a parking lot across campus. My Jeep barely starts from 30 feet away. Am jelly.

I had a 2-Way Compustar in my last vehicle and it was decent although I wouldn't say I ever got 1km unless it was direct line-of-site and even then it was a bit iffy on that kind of range.

But there are a couple of advantages, primarily the ability to start the car from practically anywhere, and without having your keys at hand. An example would be if the car has been valet parked and you don't have the keys but wish to get into a warm vehicle rather than have the valet start it as you're leaving the venue. Another example would be if you're separated from your keys, (keys in jacket, which is at the coat check). Yet another would be if you're carpooling (left your car at the highway 22 junction to go snowboarding) and you're being dropped back off. You'd need to start the car at much more than 1 km distance travelling at highway speeds in order for it to be warm by the time you arrive.

On a side note, I haven't posted in quite some time and it's nice to see all these oldschoolers still around. J-hop, ExtraSlow, Berserker, killramos, it's good to see some familiar faces.

When I park at the airport in winter, I’d start my car before landing to make sure I’m in a toasty car.

I'm an 08, and I often get reminded that I'm not OG around here.

okay, I get it, there's a few situations where it would be cool. But those seem relatively uncommon for me anyway. Besides I'm just trying to justify my low income lifestyle.
