    Default Microwave below a counter?

We bought a new house and were going to be replacing all the kitchen cabinets. We met with a couple cabinet places and they all suggest we move the microwave to the island which would put it below the counters. Were used to having it in the normal spot in the upper cabinets but now that we look at the new styles it looks way cleaner with no microwave up top. For anyone who's made this change do you absolutely hate it?

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

Why don't you just go with no microwave at all?

I’m a pretty big food purist, but I don’t consider a microwave to be optional.

My microwave gets multiple uses daily, probably more than any single other appliance.

As for the island. See if you can get a pull out one? Makes it less annoying to bend over to put stuff in.

The only time I would want it below chest height is if I had this

it's fine. but get the drawer type. the awkward bend and reach in is for chumps.

edit. not first, but that angled display is awesome!

Drawer type is a pain. I get that maybe it feels fancier not to have your microwave as the visual centrepiece of the kitchen, but it's just less function to have it low-down.

Source: have a relative with the drawer and it's dumb.

Just have it lift out of the middle of the island like they do with some displays.. It's hidden when you don't need it and can pop up when you do. Maybe it would depend on your family's height? Being 6 foot 8, I hate having to bend down to grab something and like mine over the stove.

Ya, functionally, I think up high is the best. But if you're going to have one down low, I think drawer is better then door.

We have a drawer type in our island. It's great! Totally out of the way, not really that much of a pain to use at all.
Would do it again for sure.

I'm going on 10 years with the microwave below the counter in the island. Not an issue at all and it's nice to have it out of sight. It's the same height as taking something out of an oven, I don't see what the big deal is.

Way tougher to clean the inside with the drawer. Don't buy it unless you get a matching Wolf toaster.

Microwave is definitely not optional with us either, its used multiple times daily. I'll check out those drawer types

Yea but have you ever seen a left handed microwave? Bunch of elitists if you ask me.

Yeah now that i see kitchens without the big opening for microwaves it looks so much nicer. Good call on the oven point

Thanks for all the help boys.

Ours is built into the island below counter height, really like it being out of sight and not taking up space elsewhere.

It’s a higher priority than the toaster oven for sure.

I can say with great certainty that if i had a bellow the waist Microwave, my 18mo old would have microwaved our keys, cell phones, toys, tv remotes, ect. We looked at a place where it was in the island it was just weird.

+1. I have the same setup and there aren't any issues.

we bought my parents place and they renovated and modernized the interior and now the microwave is on the island.
personally I like it as our kitchen doesnt have many upper cabinets and makes it look more open. the only downsize is that yeah you have to get low to access the microwave which is not a big deal to me. maybe if you are 6ft+

my only concern is getting testicle radiation when standing in front of it haha.
