Gov't is reporting that it was ammonium nitrate stored from an abandoned tanker ship some years ago, set off by an unrelated fire (maybe fireworks).

Wow when you think Americans are bad...

Read the comments on al jazeera English's reporting...

No wonder this world is getting so bad.

Do you think this explosion was god's punishment for the scourge of portrait mode which is obviously rampant among the Lebanese population?

Looks like US Generals seem to think it was a bomb of some sort and not an accident:
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...t-Lebanon.html

Meanwhile Lebanon's PM says it was 2450 TONS of ammonium nitrate that blew up. Trying to figure out if that's a typo and should be KG instead, but if true that seems like way too much of any kind of volatile material to be stored in one place.

What's the standard operating procedure for explosives storage facilities anyway? This seemed to be right in the middle of a bunch of other buildings?

It's Beirut... And an explosive. You leave it in an unsecured area for 6 years.

Once upon a time, Beirut was a really nice town, practically a tourist hotspot.

Yeah kinda wish they'd get back to that. But they're too busy trying to start wars.

Amazing what happens when you let a group of Islamic terrorists run a country for a decade.

What wars are the Lebanese govt trying to start?

Hezbollah, while they have a significant influence, aren’t actually running the country. It’s not an active war zone and until recently has been extremely safe to visit as a tourist. The economic crisis that started last year and today’s explosion certainly changed things, but it’s not like you’re visiting Iraq or Syria or something as you guys imply.
