Default DIY Wills - Online option request

My son has been telling me to make a will. I don't think my situation or finances are complex, but it may make sense to have something in writing. Are the various online options bad for any reason? Google shows many online choices from $39. Very appealing price point.

No interest in sitting down with a lawyer, I don't think I'd get any real individual advice for a few hundred dollars, and I don't think I need it for any price.

Probably best to just get a law degree

If you aren't expecting any fights over your earthly possessions, write one yourself and get it notarized by any licensed notary.

If you have greedy relatives that will want more than you leave them, you'll probably have to shell out a few thousand in lawyer fees to make it as air tight as possible.

Either way, any will is contestable.

Hello. Going to a lawyer and getting it done by them is your best bet and a hassle-free transaction.

Lawyers and hassle free in the same sentence. Is this real life? Lawyer job description is being a professional hassler.

If you have a simple will, I struggle to understand how a lawyer ads value to that transaction.

Having gone through a 6 year battle and thousands in legal fees after a self-made will was contested. I would only use a lawyer based on my personal experience.

If the will is contested, it's a shitshow no matter what. The key is to die broke. That's my plan.

This is the way. My in-laws keep trying to cheap out on stuff so they can leave the girls "their inheritance" but there have been so many extended family fights when people have died about assets that both of them have told their parents to spend it all. Leave them $15k for funerals and to wrap up their affairs but besides that its just not worth the potential shit storm from people coming out of the woodwork.

Thankfully my parents are poor so I'll just have to rent a dumpster to throw away their shit and call it done.

Paying a lawyer just means end of the day the money will go where you intend it.

Doesn’t prevent someone from burning thousands of the estates asset in legal feels dragging things through the courts for something they aren’t entitled too though.

Best plan as ES mentioned is to die with nothing, if you want to distribute wealth do it before you die.

    .
A better option can be a 'living inheritance' - gift it away early to kids, and reduce probate taxes and fees on the estate.

spend or give it away before your death. That's a smart move. Been advising my mother to do that, although she's not in great health so she can't really travel like she did 15 years ago.

Give it to your (trustworthy) kids, have them pay all your bills from that gift until you die. Only works for cash inheritances though.

    I really liked willful.co

$200 or so for wills for me and my wife, free to update any time you have a change. Go thru a step by step wizard and input your wishes, print, sign in front of two witnesses, then store for safe keeping. Have a kid or get divorced or get a new pet or want to change % allocations for your kids later on in life? Login, make the updates, then print and sign again. Really easy and convenient.

Unless you have a really complicated estate I don’t see the value in paying a lawyer $1000+ and then paying more for amendments every time you have a life change.
