Default Add EV charging to garage? Cost?

Was having this chat with a buddy, and didn't really know, so I'll let you dudes ELI5.
What's the process and cost to add EV charging to a detached garage? My house has overhead power to the rear detached garage, where the Enmax meter is, which then goes underground to my house basement where the panel is.

Would I be able to put a sub-panel right at the garage without running cable back from my house? What's a typical EV charger anyways? 30A? What's all the hardware cost?

Just trying to learn, and understand the costs.

something something Enmax will give you free hardware if you give them access to your usage statistics for a few years?

I've looked into this recently, and what I could gather from various Enmax employees, is that you need a new "Main" panel in your garage, which will then feed your "sub-panel" (your house/old main panel).

Then you just need to run wiring for a 240v plug and whatever amp circuit breaker you want. So probably plan for $500 for Enmax t disco/reconnect power, plus. CB panel, wiring, electrician, charger unit, etc.

    $1500

    $1500 is pretty reasonable.

Newer Tesla's can charge at 48A (60A circuit).

The new F150 is supposed to charge at 80A (100A circuit).

The new house is getting 200A service installed ($5K estimate.... still waiting on final bill from Enmax) and then a 100A panel in the garage from the 200A main in the house.

No idea what it would cost you.

I know it cost me $300 to pull a line from my panel to an attached garage with a homeowner permit ($100 in wire plug plug and breaker).

I'm going the other way around on electrical service thanks to the overhead lines; 200a in the garage with a 100a sub to the house.

I think the true cost of ExtraSlow's desired outcome here will depend on whether or not you'll require a 200a service or can keep your existing (presumably 100a) service from pole-to-garage.

That demands a load calculation, and as benyl points out, also requires knowledge of what the charging demands of your desired EV are.

If you don't have a lot of large appliances (i.e. the biggest thing you run is an electric dryer, and don't have A/C, or a hot tub), then you might be able to get away with staying on 100a service, perhaps with a compromise on rate-of-charge in your vehicle.

If all you're doing is plugging in the car overnight who cares if it takes a few hours longer to charge. Same thing as phone fast chargers. For some folks' usage patterns, they're valuable, for others, it makes no difference.

Same. I want to bury the lines while I'm at it.

If you need to move from a 100a service to a 200a service I'd budget at least double Tik-Tok's $1500; possibly up to $5k.

Electric oven and cooktop is the other big source of electric load outside of what I mentioned. This calculator might help you guesstimate— but obviously won't substitute the advice of a qualified electrician.

I believe you cannot exceed 80% of rated 100a load (i.e. 80% of 240*100 == 24kW) for your service assuming all large electrical loads are run simultaneously.

Adding the outlet in your garage is the easiest part of the whole operation; if that's all you need, $500 for material costs plus whatever electrical inspections you opt to do would be the cheapest this could possibly end up. legal and insurance bla bla bla notwithstanding...

Edit: lol, Jordan proved me wrong right as I posted.

No doubt your house already had a 200a electrical service and a panel real close by. $400 is a steal when you consider your guy (assuming one was pulled) paid $112 minimum to the city for an inspection. That's definitely a bro price.

Am I reading this right @ExtraSlow - you have no panel at all in your garage? That seems silly if that's where the meter / demarc is. Where do all your detached garage's outlets and opener etc. have breakers? Inside your house?

yes. no panel in garage, breakers for garage are inside house. Agree that's not ideal. I didn't build this place.

Well that sucks. $1500 is pretty optimistic IMO.

If/when you do this, definitely get a few sparkies to price out a 200A service upgrade to the garage. It will be the "cheapest" time to do it but there's a bunch of cost built into that as ENMAX has to roll out and mess with things.

as point of reference; in 2015 I [over]paid $3600 to move enmax service to garage, add a new 100a main panel and run THWN copper of appropriate size through existing conduit

I wouldn't recommend the outfit I went with and in retrospect it felt like too much money for services rendered. In your case all the copper is there so it's just the service move and new panel, so under 3k ought to be very doable.

I'd wanna be sure I'd be in the place for another 5-10 years before i dropped that kind of dough just to charge an ev faster.

If you are serious about this EV thing then I would assume you want minimum 200 to the garage and another 100 for the house (more if you think natty gas is the evil). 300A total service?

Or am I missing something here. I assume most people have / use 2 cars?

I dont think ENMAX will offer you anything bigger than a 200a service on a resi address. Anything else would be big bucks. A sub panel's amp rating isn't additive to the total service size.

biggest sub panel you can run is 100a so you'd end up with two 100a services to the house; but that's like 3800sqft+ big baller territory. I know ES just sold his trailer but he's a zero or two off from double meat electrical service ballin.

This whole EV thing sounds super well thought through.

As long as the cars are parked parallel they can both suck 100A and break the laws of physics.
