There are racist/sexist identity tokenism quotas at companies. I worked at one. I was involved in the hiring process. My VP had his bonus held back if he didn't hire a specific number of visible minorities. Minorities were defined as any woman, or any non-white or non-Indian male. So when women got those jobs, they had to deal with people wondering if they got it as a result of the diversity mandate. I said that would happen and it did. So the ones who were qualified and would have got the job anyway had to deal with extra bullshit being second guessed by everyone, and they were worse off. Without that policy, this isn't a question that comes up.

You should have seen the look on my manager's face when the VP promoted a woman who reported to him to a higher level than he was at. She still wasn't his boss, she was just more senior than her boss.

If you couldn't tell, I don't support these types of policies. It's bullshit for them and it's bullshit for me. So I'm entirely consistent on this matter. Clear?

Haha, my wife and I didn't totally agree on whether or not these policies were justifiable. That was until she was told there are too many white women (and there are barely any women period) and they need more representation of women of color. Suddenly that game wasn't so fair anymore. I got a good laugh as I invited her to take a seat at the table of the oppressors.

It's not like we were turning women away either. We could not find any. They just weren't applying. We screwed some dude out of an offer because the VP said to hold it until we interview a woman first. We tried for a month and there just weren't any that applied for that role. He couldn't wait any longer, so we had to part ways.

So even though ones who were qualified and would have got the job anyway had to deal with bullshit...which was my fucking point. That this kind of questioning isn't limited to white men, who have had a long history of their own kind of hiring advantages. Less codified, sure. But definitely there (this is even ignoring the freebies like 'coloured's need not apply').

What did the people "who were qualified and would have gotten the job anyway" personally do to deal with extra bullshit? What did they personally do to be second guessed by everyone?

Maybe you didn't do anything. You're just unlucky to have been put into a group because of something out of your control.
