It's true the lights are timed differently depending on the time of day but I never drive during peak times. At 6 am every light I hit is green - I am sure it's different for people who drive at 8 or 9 am.

Mitsu thanks for chiming in, but my post had nothing to do with Killarney, or 17th Ave (or those wonky lights) or your gym "near" Aspen wherever that is.
Well you missed the point then, sorry if I wasn't clear - if you go back and re-read you will see that the 10 minutes you see on google maps does not take into account lights (which are particularly bad going East/West), and my comparison was simply to show that going a significantly shorter distance in the same direction on all the same major roads takes me ~15 minutes. I didn't mention anything about 17th ave, not sure where you got that from.

Interesting, because Killarney doesn't even border Bow Tr. Unless you are subtracting the distance you are travelling within your neighborhood, which is a dense grid full of lights, stop signs and school zones.

As mentioned, the lights are timed differently depending on the time of day, as is the traffic. People aren't going list their travel times during peak rush hour, they are going to list the most optimal/minimal time when bragging about their commute times.
Takes approx. 1 minute to drive to bow trail, I do it almost every day. After that you are on the same route West to Aspen or wherever else. Most of the stop signs are East/West, not North/South, so going to bow trail is pretty much a straight shot from most places in the neighborhood. The few 'arteries' that feed Killarney off bow trail like 26th and 33rd make it very quick. Anyway, it was just for comparison sake, I know it isn't perfect. It takes a lot less time to drive a couple blocks to bow trail than it does to drive to downtown, so my point is that starting from a much closer area it still takes 12-15 mins to hit Aspen and can be longer if you have bad luck with the lights as they are all very long. My biggest complaint with Google Maps is (and all the other mapping apps) is that they do not take into account stoplights whatsoever. Any time spent at red lights simply adds onto your ETA, and the lights going east/west in that part of the city are particularly bad. I've never hit the Sarcee light and the wait is always 4 mins or so, if you don't make it though with the first wave and have to wait again (happens about half the time to me), there's ~8 minutes right there almost doubling the 10 minute ETA from a single light. I typically drive that route at 8pm and then again around 10pm so rush hour isn't a factor in either case.

    Update of 12 Ave:

I'm not sure if having a Dollarama close by is a good thing or a bad thing.

Yea but... 1 minute quick? I'm impressed that you can cover nearly 2 km in 1 min but also concerned that you are blasting through inner city streets at 100+ km/h.

Especially since it doesn't take lights into account like you said, although I'm pretty sure it takes traffic into account.

I am just bugging you of course, I don't even know where you live. I'm just peeved that you seem to be trying to out-douche me.

You'd have to move to Aspen first, bucko.
Well you picked literally the furthest possible point in Killarney haha, so if you do that then yeah it takes longer. I live North of Luke's drug mart on that map so it takes me a lot less time and I don't have to cross that main road either. The only reason I even mentioned Killarney is because it's so close to Bow Trail and it's closer to Aspen than Downtown, and it still takes me 12-15 mins to get up there, so coming from downtown would take even longer.

If that's what you think I was trying to do then I apologize as that was definitely not my intent. I was just pointing out my frustrations with google maps as they never account for stop lights, and depending on the route, it can easily double your ETA. That's why using google maps to advertise commute times is sometimes very misleading. The lights East/ West are particularly bad in that area and I hate sitting at them.

No not at all, but I admit it was my intent. I'm only here for pointless, time-wasting arguments.

I swear this place is a bigger time-warp than Cities: Skylines. Hey look, it's almost lunchtime! *pulls out $90*
Haha it's true. I do the same thing when I have some downtime. Working from home has been 10hr days for the most part though which blows, so I have a lot less time for beyond (some people are probably happy about that )

If you really want a time warp, and if you like Cities Skylines, check out Planet Zoo on Steam, it's my new favorite "build and manage" type game. The bundle with all expansions is on sale right now too ($60 for game + 3 expansions).

So for anyone living on the western fringes (including the NW) is the upcoming SW ring road going to change your commute into the inner city or dt?

For example, I could see Valley Ridge or Tuscany residents picking Bow Tr. over 16th or Crowchild.
Only change for me is it'll save me 10 mins visiting @Mibz once every 3 years when it opens fully in 2022.

There's also a Costco going in down in the SW on the reserve that the ring road will be right beside. Should be nice to take some pressure off Deerfoot Meadows.
