Lime & Bird are in a pilot program allowing them freedom.

In Calgary other than that its not legal to use motorized devices in the City... but nobody cares and still does.
I thought personal e-scooters are ok to use following the shared e-scooters rules?

If people do buy one now there's a risk of City changing the rules after the pilot project or cancelling all-altogether (which I highly doubt and think these will stay for good). Did you guys hear news of many injuries from using these? haha, guys please be careful! the more injuries, the more restriction and rules City may enforce later I think.

Only Bird and Lime scooters are legal at this time. Not personal ones.

But now Birds are out and they are black, it'll be hard for cops to distinguish Bird scooter vs personal ones if they even checked that closely.

Co-Worker got a couple of these in spring and has been riding all around the burbs and cops didn't care. I assume unless you caused an auto accident, it won't really matter.

Can I drive my own electric scooter?
Operating a personally owned electric scooter anywhere on the road right of way, including city sidewalks, bike lanes or roadway is still illegal under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. Personal electric scooters are allowed to operate on pathways. The provincial exemption to operate an electric scooter only applies to the electric scooters owned by Permit Holders operating in the Shared Electric Scooter Pilot.

Thanks, just found more details on personal use of e-scooters. Apparently personal e-scooters only allowed on pathways... now that Bird is operating, not too worried with my black Xiaomi.

Its a weird wording.. but I'm thinking "personal" are the mobility ones people need to use.

How much does a Xiaomi run for? The only ones i've seen are the Segway ones and they are close to $1000.

Mine is the Xiaomi M365 Pro, got it for $900 and not easy to get. You can get the non-pro M365 at around $500 which is still a great scooter. There is a campaign on Indiegogo for Segway Ninebot Max which is slightly better specs and heavier for similar money(when there was more discount) as M365 Pro, would've gotten this one if I didn't have the Xiaomi. Xiaomi owns Segway now so both are very similar.

The segway kickscooter max looks pretty sweet. 700USD, 40 mile range and 15.5mph max speed. The range is almost double most other scooters

Cool thanks for the info. Yeah the Ninebot Max on Indiegogp is the one i've seen advertised and was considering. Didn't know they were the same company now. I'm in no rush though so will probably wait til next spring to see what's out there at that point... that way at least i'll get a full summer out of the investment.

To clarify the rules of scooters:

    "16-month pilot program"

"Operating a personally owned electric scooter anywhere on the road right of way, including city sidewalks, bike lanes or roadway is still illegal under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. Personal electric scooters are allowed to operate on pathways. The provincial exemption to operate an electric scooter only applies to the electric scooters owned by Permit Holders operating in the Shared Electric Scooter Pilot."

The problem is that there is so many people on sidewalk that I was forced off to the road.

Our sidewalk isn't made for this.

just about wiped a guy out on one on 4st sw. came buzzing out and across the crosswalk without even looking that it was safe; he was quick enough that when I scanned the intersection prior to going he wasn't there. I ended up jamming on the brakes, stopping in oncoming traffic. he got scared and almost fell, ended up walking the scooter the rest of the way across. was scary for both of us, and i'm sure it won't be long until we hear more and more stories of these in accidents...

Saw some guy on Sunday lane filtering and going between cars through a long line of traffic on one and then zipped across the sidewalk.

A guy clipped my arm with the bar of the scooter as he blew by me on the sidewalk this morning at full speed (from behind, with no warning..heh). It won't be long until more serious stuff starts happening.

yeah they really shoud be treated like bikes, not peds, use the roads/bike lanes, and it'd be nice if they had some sort of sound so you know they're coming.

But regardless of what rules are put in place, its practically unenforceable so people will do what they want.

I haven't ridden one yet but to my knowledge they don't have bells or horns, which seems odd when a bicycle requires a bell to be legal. IMO the scooters should be treated exactly like bikes, bike lanes or side of the road only. But I also hate (most) bikers on the road, so I am probably never going to be happy there
