Default Bitching about charts MEGA THREAD (split)

The masks will never come off. That BS has long sailed. Double masking might even come to play.

Here is AHS playing games with stats again - the actual orange chart (non ICU) is ON TOP OF ICU cases - and its own comparison tool shows this. Form a quick glance though, its made to look worse. Name: dsadadsad.jpg

Regardless, we are down to 450 total hospital cases but the government will wait at least 3-4 weeks after this to open anything up. Another month of no gyms/dining etc.

Restaurants tomorrow, we crossed the magic 450 number today with 434 so 3 week clock starts now.

Not sure why this is complicated for some people.

What are you on about? The first part of your post aside, the AHS graph is correct, go check out today's numbers on it and they line up. 434 total hospitalizations, 81 in ICU and 353 non-ICU

As stated, and shown, the NON ICU chart should be at 499, but it shows ~600 relative to the Y axis.

It SHOULD be on the 500 scale for NON ICU.

What AHS should have done is a 3rd line for TOTAL cases.

Y-axis is total hospitalizations which is the sum of ICU and non-ICU. Seems pretty accurate to me.

Revelations is here to tell the Tableau people how to make a chart.

Then they should have called the NON ICU portion, TOTAL HOSPITALIZATIONS.

If the ICU representation is accurate, why fuck up the NON ICU representation?

450 hospital cases in a population of 4.4 million. Pandemic indeed.
That's just context that's not allowed.

Like what are the norms for seasonal cases of flu, complications? Perhaps 45 ICU patients? Numbers we will never see.

It’s a stacked area chart, real advanced stuff apparently.

    1 + 1 = 2

It’s basic math, not some bizarre hidden agenda.

Yea its basic grade 10 charting - if you are going to stack the chart, then you make the numbers actually represent the axis. 500=/= 600.

Haha laughing at this charting. I build Tableau charts weekly and you guys are hilarious. Email them and ask for labels on to reduce the math you have to do.
You get a choice, pick min/max, most recent or every point.
Probably every point and allow overlap.

It’s an arbitrary metric compared against equally arbitrary yardsticks. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with that as long as it’s done thoughtfully, there is no one silver bullet metric.

It’s a good way to dumb things down for the kind of people who don’t know how stacked area charts work.
Thats pretty funny that a billion dollar organization cant get a basic grade 10 concept down. If you stack a chart you label the data points accordingly and dont hide charts within a chart. A 3rd line should have been introduced that showed the total hospital count.

500 =/= 600 magically because AHS said so.

    yea its sad.

Please look at the y axis for the NON ICU cases and tell me the represented number for a select date? Eg Jan 1 ? The y axis is labeled 'hospitalized cases' - which is a generic indicator for each of the ICU and NON ICU charts. Not totals.

This is the chart default setting btw.

It’s a stacked area chart. The total area under the curve is hospitalizations, which has an ICU component and non icu component. The two components add up to total hospitalizations with simple arithmetic.

I feel like a broken record, but this isn’t complicated stuff.

again, that wasnt my question - what value do you see for Jan 1 on the Y axis for the NON ICU cases?

Stacked charts are fine, but they have to be done and labeled properly - otherwise they will be misused.

Grade 10 charting could have done a stacked chart better.
