You can always get a wood permit and go for a rip up the FTR towards nordegg until you find some fall.
Honestly, i'd do this in a minute if i had a chainsaw.. real question is if i'd make my money back on the saw

130$ for 10 bags of wood vs 200-250$ for a chainsaw, plus gas, plus your time, plus maintenance.

Long term it'd be worth it I guess, 2 year payback basically if you burn 10 bags a year and have space to store the wood.

You can get a lot more than 10 bags of wood in one go with a wood permit.

Camping you are burning 1-2 bags a day probably. It’s pretty easy to go through a ton of wood if you have fires regularly.

If you enjoy spending a full day and have room to store it. Cutting your own makes sense. But if storage is a problem, or you don't have a free day, the bags are an okay deal and excellent convenience.

If you had a back yard firepit then its a no brainer. But if its 2-3 camping trips a year ... not sure it'd be worth it mostly just from a time aspect. Would be most a day to go drive out, cut, fill the truck, stack at home, etc to save the 130$ to buy it.

Construction cutoffs into our backyard firepit - pine, spruce, oak, maple. Also hardwood from our own and neighbor's yards, lilac, apple, mountain ash and even sometimes birch.

Just a heads up that the Transcanada around Golden is reportedly going to be closed for up to 15 weeks in Summer this year.

I cant find any details of dates for this closure but its really going to throw a wrench in my travel plans - highway 3 is quite slow.

This is our travel plan for our US trip:

Date Day Where Distance From Previous Stop
7/3/2020 Friday Kelowna or Nelson 7/8
    7/4/2020 Saturday Vancouver 4/8
    7/5/2020 Sunday Vancouver -
    7/6/2020 Monday Vancouver -
    7/7/2020 Tuesday Vancouver -
    7/8/2020 Wednesday Seattle 2.5
    7/9/2020 Thursday Seattle -
    7/10/2020 Friday Nehalem 4
    7/11/2020 Saturday Nehalem 4
    7/12/2020 Sunday Jedediah Smith 7
    7/13/2020 Monday Jedediah Smith -
    7/14/2020 Tuesday San Fran 7
    7/15/2020 Wednesday San Fran -
    7/16/2020 Thursday San Fran -
    7/17/2020 Friday San Fran -
7/18/2020 Saturday somewhere to portland 5
    7/19/2020 Sunday Portland 5
    7/20/2020 Monday Portland -
    7/21/2020 Tuesday Spokane 5.5
    7/22/2020 Wednesday spokane -
    7/23/2020 Thursday Calgary ?

Alot of driving but we are also planning on staying 2+ nights at all but one stop so that we can actually do things.
Quick google came up with this:

    https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/k...fic-management

Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 is a construction project that will upgrade 4.8 km of Highway 1 east of Golden, B.C. We’ll provide some more info on the project further down, but first, here's the important stuff:

    • Work on the Highway will start in fall 2020

    • There will be NO stoppages, delays or closures related to this project in summer 2020

    • There will be NO daytime stoppages, delays or closures in summer 2021, 2022 or 2023 either

    • It is from May 15th - September 15th that there will be no daytime stoppages or closures. They know TransCanada Highway 1 is far too busy to have delays during this time.

    • Any required closures will occur in the middle of the night, or in the off seasons (early spring and late fall)

We canned this plan because the border was closed

If any of you ever drive down west of 22x about 1 km before the Bragg Creek turn off, there is a red shed on the side of the road marked “free firewood”, last two weekends that I went by it, it was full. Not sure what kind of wood but it’s free. I’ll try to take pic next time I go by.

Was out there biking and went looking for it... couldn’t find!

Its the one playing banjo music, and the "free wood" is around back.

My bad, I meant 10km before the Bragg Creek turn off, I know its past Priddis for sure, I will see if I can find it on street view after work. I'm driving down that way this weekend and I will take pics.

Found it over lunch, again not sure how often they have wood, but where the bins are in the pic is where they stack them.
