If he was smart he'd come out and say he's ALSO mad at all the white people who don't wear it these days either.

Don cherry is not some kind of valuable cultural institution. He is an entertainer that has seen his best days go by several decades ago.
Why on earth anyone would care what he says, or if he's given a platform to say it, baffles me.

He definitely should have retired a long time ago. I haven't listened to him in forever. I do think he should have been allowed to go out with a little grace. Probably wont even get a montage now

Not sure you can expect to start a sentence with ‘those people’ or ‘you people’ and keep your job.. let alone on a global stage

Which in this case makes it a market issue.

If Rogers thought it was worth the money to keep him around, they would. Instead they were given the excuse they were looking for to get him and his contract off the books.

Not the first time his mouth has gotten him into hot water.

Sort of on topic I don't wear a red poppy any more either and pretty much because the work clothes I wear and the job sites I'm at aren't conducive to such. Plus I would lose o ton of them but I still put monies in the puppy boxes when I happen upon one.

So not wearing a poppy doesn't mean I don't care or that I don't donate and if I had been at a service today, I would've been wearing a poppy.
My kids lost three this week. Good jorb kids.

You really think this is about money? If it was Rogers wouldn’t have PR’d apologies including from Ron. This is to please people that are angered by his comments pure and simple. What we’ve lost is choice. There are a million things on TV that I don’t agree with, I have the choice to turn it off. We’ve lost that choice. This is how you create an echo chamber, and this is what I despise about PC culture.

So, I dug into the linked article and there's a quote in there.
Are these literally the words that Don Cherry was terminated for?

You know, I was talking to a veteran, and I said, I’m not going to run the (annual Remembrance Day montage) anymore, because what’s the sense? I live in Mississauga, nobody wears, very few people wear a poppy,” Cherry said on Coach’s Corner. “Downtown Toronto, forget it, downtown Toronto, nobody wears a poppy.

“And I’m not going to, and he says, wait a minute. How about running it for the people that buy them?

“Now you go to the small cities and you know, the rows on rows, you people love — that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price. Anyhow, I’m going to run it for you great people and good Canadians that bought a poppy.”

People have been getting angry about Don Cherry on HNIC since the early 80s. Why would Sportsnet care to please angry people now? One person making a choice to turn it off isn't what they're worried about. They're worried about lots people people choosing to turn it off at a time when people are already choosing to turn it off at a high rate.

If he was smart he would have said that in his original rant.

So which is more correct, should he have said “y’all people” like Chris Tucker or “you all people” like Jackie Chan?

They don’t need to tune out of HNIC, they just need to tune out of Coach’s Corner.

The whole point of Cherry (and panels and whatever else sports do between halves or periods or games) is to keep people watching for the ads. People won’t watch 15mins straight of ads, but stuff them around something worthwhile and hats where the value comes in.

But yes, Sportsnet like other sports networks are dealing with cable cutters and needin to replace viewership. They overpaid for broadcast rights and have been dealing with replacing expensive on-air talent for a couple years now.
