It's a good thing your mom is OK.
Did the police give your mom some opportunities for councilling when they took the statement?
My story:
I got robbed one time during my graveyard shift. White guy with a black bat. Had 2-inch metal spikes wrapped around the tip. Smashed it on the counter, "give me all your fucking money".
Whoa. Gave him money, called the cops, they had the K-9 and HAWC-1 but lost the trail.
He got caught eventually, it was on the news.
Hit me, a porn store and finally Rogers video where they got caught.
Turned out it was a carload of guys in an old camaro.
The cops held up the bat in the trunk. Scary.
Weird thing is I can recall that Camaro orbitting the block before they hit, now that I knew what car they were driving.
A plain-clothes police officer came to my door to issue a court supoena, but they plead guilty so I didn't have to go.
Would've like to have seen the guy, but I got the name though.
I was offered grief councilling, but I refused, I was fine.
Violent robbery leaves you really shaken up. Very scary stuff.

Important thing is, if they just want the money, give it to them, it's not worth getting hurt/dying for.
You never know the true situation. It's just like Clausewitz' On War; the defender has the advantage of knowing the terrain, but the attacker has the choice of initiative and method of attack.
If I had fought back when I was robbed, the guy would have had back-up around the corner and I probably wouldn't be around anymore.
