I have a question regarding importing a vehicle that's older than 15 years.
I read on the RIV website that I don't have to pay the $205 registration fee for the cars older than 15 years.
Does that mean that I dont need the federal inspection to be done?

Does anyone know what else changes for those vehicles?

    thanks,
I was also wondering about crossing at Carway. Has anyone done it from there? or is Couts the only/best place to cross?

this thread needs a search function anyhoo, is their a rule/limit as to how stock the car needs to be for importing? as in a fairly modified vehicle would be disallowed for whatever reason opposed to stock?

My WRX was lowered on shocks and springs, they don't check anything at the border. If you can get your provincial inspection passed, nobody will bother you about it being lowered.

Just don't mention it at the border.

hey guys, like another previous poster from a couple pages back, I too am also looking to import a vehicle from the states, however I wont have time to actually go down to the border and drive vehicle back up.

Are there any import companies beyonders have dealt with here that are fairly reputable and provide decent cost for all the services? Thanks!

Don't use A-A Auto Transport. (Based out of Vancouver?) They put thousands of dollars of damages on a Sequoia I brought up, and then denied it was their fault and that the truck was already like that. (Because they had noted on the initial inspection there were paint chips. Yeah, that is totally on par with the deep dent in the roof, the fender flare torn off, and the tire punctured.)

I am having trouble finding the contact information for the head offices. If i have a letter from a certified Porsche dealer stating no recalls, will this suffice?

It depends, call RIV and ask if they will accept that. RIV has access to certain manufacturers recall database so they wont even need you to go around digging for a letter.

    Found this:

    http://ucanimport.blogspot.com/2007/...to-canada.html

To obtain a Recall Clearance Letter for a Porsche purchase in the U.S. please follow these steps:

    1. Make sure you have proof of ownership of the vehicle i.e. Title, Purchase Order or a Bill of Sale.
    2. Draft a cover letter using the Sample Letter in the UCanImport guide.
    3. Fax the cover letter and proof of ownership to Porsche US at 1-800-322-2436
    4. It will take up to 2 weeks to receive the Recall Clearance Letter, but they will advise you in advance if there are any recalls outstanding. If your Porsche has a recall, it will have to be completed in the US prior to importation.

To reach a customer service representative at Porsche US, telephone 1-800-767-7243 and don't select any options; simply wait on the line and a representative will answer your call.
    But then found this:

Basically Porsche is being a dick.
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

When I got my recall letter at the end of 2007, I called 1-800-Porsche, Option 3. They faxed me a letter indicating no recalls within a day.

For those who bought a car from California, do you know if documentation fees at dealerships are regulated and capped or can they charge whatever they want?

^ I'm not sure, but are you planning on having it shipped? Otherwise, they will charge you their state tax.

Yeah, I'd definitely be shipping it unless it was completely necessary for me to go down and drive it up.

But hmm, I found some articles stating that the documentation fee is capped at $55 in Cali. I tried to find it on their .gov site but wasn't able to, so just looking to get some real confirmation.
