Get Bell Express Vu.. more HDTV channels plus all the channels are digital unlike shaw.
If you're with shaw. You need an HDTV box to view HDTV channels. You have 2 options for that:
1) The normal HDTV box
2) HDTV + PVR
I have the shaw HDTV+PVR and LOVE it. I would hate to watch tv without the PVR ability.
Now, I wish shaw had more HD content though, if I had the money I would get a bell HD+PVR solution I think.
Unfortunately, the expressvu and shaw digital standard definition channels are way overcompressed. Analog SD on shaw looks better if you can get a clean enough signal. For overall content, bell beats shaw hands down. For HD content, bell is untouchable in Calgary.Originally posted by gggunit

Thanks for the responses.
So, if I stick with shaw I will need an HDTV or PVR-HDTV box to view HDTV channels.
Now what about cables?
Shaw has the basic HDTV box -- that has DVI but no HMDI inputs, my tv has no DVI but HDMI. They have pricier PVR-HDTV boxes that have HMDI but I don't really need/want PVR right now.
Can I use a hi-res component video cable instead of HMDI or DVI? will I be losing a shitload of quality?
thanks.
hehe everyone SAYS they don't need/want a PVR. But once you get one, you can NOT live without one. I don't even watch TV at friend's houses that don't have PVR. It's painful to watch TV without a PVR.
Now, cable selection.
DVI == digital
HDMI == digital
you can go DVI --> HDMI, cheap adapter.
Component is analog, but for short runs such as from your set top box to TV, and with even cheap shielded component cables, I can NOT tell the difference between component vs HDMI even on high res 1920x1080 test images on a 1080p display.
So, can't go wrong whichever way you choose!

Thanks rage2, you rule.
Haha. I want the PVR really bad, but can't afford that damn box. You don't watch TV at a friends unless they have PVR?? What difference does that make?Originally posted by rage2

Yes. Or, you start a hockey game. Press PAUSE. Flip to xbox 360, play a game or 2 of nhl2k6, flip back to the hockey game, unpause, you'll be about 30 mins behind real time (be sure not to check beyond, news sites, stats sites, or listen to radio!). Then you can skip all commercials and both intermissions haha. Make way better use of free time than to watch the same old commercials over and over again.

Jesus man, I know you like Transformers, but you need to get out more. No one should get this upset over a movie based on children's toys.

Shaw recently added CBC and TSN in HD, hopefully they'll increase their HD content even more. It just isn't the same without HD. PVR is awesome, record my favorite shows and watch them whenever I want.
I'm thinking about switching to Bell because they have greater HD content, no to mention their PVR system is better. But have to look into pricing since my internet and cable is bundled together with Shaw and the Bell systems are all sold out apparently.

Shit, there's only 49 users here, I doubt we'll even break 100
Well since you work for telus, show me the website so I can check it out and see pricing, etc.Originally posted by Mar
It is out and it is HD.
^^^ I'd like to see also, I have only heard of the beta versions that are in certain peoples homes, I have heard that it is supposed to be really good, and that the people who tested it, love it, but I don't know any info on it or whether it has HD channels or not.
