    Default Excessive noise question.

So anyway, today I got a ticket for my car being apparently too loud, I'm not gonna lie, even though it has a stupidly large tip (I didn't install the exhaust) the car really isn't loud at all, so I was wondering, how do they decide if a car is too loud?, is there a standard for this?, like your car must be under X number of decibels at X RPM from X distance?, as if so I'd like to get a test done and then try my luck in court fighting it, even though I have done searchs and people haven't had much luck, I haven't read about someone doing this.

To me this ticket is just another $$$ quota ticket, so would like to fight it for that reason.

I'm sure there is someone here who can anwser better they I on this subject , but I don't think there is any standards for excessive noise . I think it's more that they ( cops ) are more likely to be acting on a complaint or complaints . Again , not too sure . I've seen in other areas though , where the police do carry a device that measures the decibles of the car/bike's exhaust , and they have specific guidelines or paramater they must follow . Never heard of it here , lol .
On the subject though , I personally think big sounding exhausts on cars are like the guys driving the Hummers . Most of them suffer from the SPS , and either need or crave attention . Oh .... look at , me ... I'm soooo badazz .... lol . Personally , I'm into sleepers though , lol .....

the exhaust on that car is not much louder than stock - it is a deeper tone, but in terms of decibals, it isn't much louder. It looks a lot bigger and when combined with the fact that a deeper tone will result in the sound carrying further and makes it seem louder.

I did get a ticket for having an "enlarged exhaust opening" on that car, but it had nothing to do with the sound or loudness of the exhaust (I clarified this with the cop)

I would see what the standard for noise is (measured in decibals) and see if you can get a reading from the car (you can buy decibal meters from The Source/Radio Shack).

I have seen cops in Vancouver actually measuring the level of sound coming from exhausts on cars pulled over on the streets, but never in Calgary.

PS - I miss that car, excessive exhaust or not!

Thanks for the info guys, I'm gonna phone afew car places soon and see if they know, or maybe phone a cop station to find out, the guy needed to give me a ticket about something I think, I was just cruising threw mckenzie, then noticed him on my side, he was back and forth from being on the side to being behind looking at my car, guess he couldn't think of anything, I was cruising under 2krpm so the car was making hardly any noise, but after following me for awhile, I guess that didn't matter, guy was a rookie aswell, and probably didn't like my top that said "How to lose a cop.....throw them a donut"

I will, if I find out the information for the decibels, then I'll post it up, I'll also post up what my exhaust is and if I fight it, I'll post what happens, BUT, I might just get lazy and pay it.

Funny thing is, if it was a ticket for the tip, I'd just pay it right out, but since its for the noise which I don't think is loud at all, then I'll prolly give it a fight.

Unfortunately, in our fascist state, the cops opinion is good enough. They do not have to have a dB meter or anything.

I heard a guy try and fight it in court, the cop as his evidence claimed the guy had a modified exhaust and enlarged tip. Judge asked if this was true, guy said yes.... GUILTY.

    Fawking asswipes...

Also , if you could list all of the places you've lived or traveled to before to give me a example of your expertise in this matter . Oh , and one more thing . If you're not happy here , why stay ? Why not move to make yourself happy ?

The cop may not be able to get you on the noise violation, but he'd for sure get you on an enlarged exhaust ticket.

A db meter is not hard to find, there's ussually 2 of them on an average stereo receiver, look around and you'll find one.

Plug a mic into the receiver, and you've got something the measures db.

Don't bother trying to establish that your homemade meter is acurate, when it is easier to argue that it is consistantly wrong.

ie. Do a direct comparison between your muffler and a stock muffler system(maybe a car at a car dealer) that a judge won't dispute. If you get favorable readings, then maybe you have a case.

Good luck, if you try this, I can still see the judge and JP try to shoot you down, but it might work.

Bylaw 7255 states that 82dB is the max allowed while travelling at or under 60kph for Edmonton. I don't think it should be much or any different for Calgary.

I have a pretty nice DB meter and it depends where you put it. If you stick it in the tailpipe that's a bit different than 25 feet away.

I hate the noise rules just because they are so subjective. Harleys go free while Hyundais go to jail...

Thanks for the info guys, so it just has to be under 82db at 60kph, so it doesn't matter what gear I'm in?, this is the thing that gets me on how they decide you have a loud exhaust, you could both have the same cars going along at x speed but if one of them is in a lower gear, then the RPM will be higher in turn making more noise, making it seem like you have a loud exhaust.

If in court they ask if I have a large tip, I'll just say no, then run out and get it changed...lol ( I have been meaning to get the tip changed down to a normal size tip).
