CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

During the evening of Saturday, December 31, 2005 and the
morning of Sunday January 1, 2006, a private New Years Eve
party being hosted in the Kensington area was disrupted by a
series of altercations between invited guests and party
crashers.
At approximately 02:40 hours the altercations appeared to
have ended and the invited guests emptied on onto the street
leaving the party.
One of the individuals involved in the altercation returned
to his vehicle and attempted to race down the street without
regard for the pedestrians along the roadway as they crossed
the street.
The offending vehicle hit four pedestrians causing the death
of one 24 year old female and critically injured two other
adults, a male aged 29 and a female aged 23 both who remain
in hospital in critical condition. A fourth victim, 29 years
old, suffered only minor injuries.
The offender continued from the scene racing through an
alleyway and then northbound 10 Street up to 16 Avenue NW.
The offending vehicle was located by responding police
officers traveling east bound along 16 Avenue. The offender
failed to stop for the officers and his vehicle was safely
forced off the road by the police cruiser and he was
arrested.
Charged with eleven criminal offences is eighteen year old
Samrat Ramnik DHUNA of Calgary, Alberta.
Included in the list of charges is:
Criminal Negligence causing death,
Criminal Negligence cause bodily harm X2,
Dangerous Driving,
Impaired Driving Causing Death, Impaired driving Causing
Injury X2,
Refusal to a Breath Test,
Hit and Run Causing Death, Hit and Run causing Injury X2.
The investigators interviewed numerous witnesses who remained
at the scene but they are still looking to speak with anyone
who has information about this incident but left without
providing a statement to police.
