Just bought a new HD Plasma and was wondering if a upconverting DVD player is going to be worth it? And also will there be a noticable difference between if I hook it up using HDMI or component video cables?

its not gonna be a noticeable visual difference between the component cable and the HDMI cable, but the HDMI cable is an all-in-one cable that carries the digital audio as well as the HD video, thus eliminating the need for audio cables...

so if I replace my current dvd player (not progressive scan or upconverting) will I see a difference?
Depends on your TV's upconversion, 3:2 pulldown capabilities.
Your TV is 1280x720 resolution, 60fps progressive. So basically everything has to be displayed at that resolution and frame rate.
A normal DVD player will send 720x480 resolution interlaced image at 24 or 30fps (depending on content) to your TV. Your TV will then convert that to 1280x720@60fps, then display it.
An upconverting DVD player will take the original DVD content at 720x480x24/30, convert it to 1280x720x60fps, then send that to your TV. Your TV will take that and just display it, no conversion necessary.
Will you see a difference? Depends on which upconversion process is better.

Most(if not all) up-converting DVD players will only show an upconverted signal on the HDMI output.
I bought the Panasonic S77 for my TV and it looks beautiful. The Faroudja chips are very nice. I tried both the LG and the Panasonic, after two LG's died within days of purchasing them I tried the Panasonic... and I'm very happy. A fantastic DVD player.
I just bought an LG up-converting player (so far so good). I have it connected via an HDMI cable.
As posted above most players won't upconvert unless it's over HDMI (digital rights management).... some will if you can find the hacked firware or the special key sequence to enable it.
I have done a bit of testing and it does seem to be better quality than the 480i player I was using before. I like the 720p setting the best.
For upconverting DVD players, you ALWAYS want to set your output to the same native resolution as your TV. If not, your TV will do another conversion, defeating the purpose of an upconverting DVD player.

I am looking for an Upconversion DVD player for my new plasma -- which one should I go with and why?
thanks.
Buy a bunch, see what works best with your TV. Return the ones that don't work, take advantage of return policies .
Problem is some TVs like certain players more than others. Some players introduce heavy macroblocking on specific TV's, so it's hard to say what one to go with.
Is your plasma EDTV or HDTV? If it's EDTV (720x480 native resolution) an upconverting DVD player will make things look worse.

What rage said is correct, he knows his stuffs.
the panasonic S77 has some macroblocking issues on certain scenes with my TV but the overal quality makes it worth it for me. The LG was nice as well but after two died after only a few days of use I said no(on one the HDMI header broke clean off and the tray onthe other one refused to work half the time.)
now if audio and video both get sent over the HDMI cable how do I get a digital audio signal to my amp so that I don't have to listent to it with TV speakers?
you can still use the optical out from the DVD player at the same time, and your TV might have one as well.Originally posted by Fred

On a somewhat related note, I have a Sony LCD TV that has 1080i/720p input, yet the native resolution is only 1024x768. Is that basically just 720p?
Yes, it's 720p. And the resolution is something like 1380x760.Originally posted by sabad66

All EDTV's are 480p (720x480), most HDTVs are 720p (1280x720), and very few are 1080p (1920x1080).

I just got a Panasonic TH42PX500 how can I figure out what resolution it runs at, the website says 108OI so do I just assue it is 1280x720
It supports 720P and 1080i, so:Originally posted by Fred

720P = 1280X720
1080i = 1920X1080 interlaced.

But the native resolution is 1280x720, so 720p. 1080i input gets downconverted to 720p for display.Originally posted by Xtrema

720P = 1280X720

CRT's aren't fixed pixel displays, so there's no "set" native resolution. Resolvable resolution (basically what you can see) is around 800x600.Originally posted by kaput
So a typical old style CRT TV works at 640x480 resolution right? And thats progressive scan? If so then all you really gain from an EDTV is a wider screen and maybe slightly better internals and processes?
If you have a CRT display, there's no need for upconverting DVD players. CRT's being non fixed pixels will naturally blend the pixels, in effect blurring out all the sharp edges, macroblocking errors, etc.

After reading a bunch of reviews on Upconversion DVD Players -- I decided on this Toshiba:

It was a toss up between this on, a Samsung, a Sony and an LG -- the Toshiba was the cheapest and had some of the best opions, including a free HDMI cable.
