I just built house with them, I was really impressed with what we got for the money. We had a great construction foreman, and that makes all the difference.

You don't get much from a spec house (with most builders), but with the right upgrades, you can get a very nice house for good value.

A friend of mine is a salesperson for Excel.

They aren't bad homes if you're looking in the starter market. Definetly one of the cheaper home builders in that niche.

^^^^ I gotta ask, what are you basing that on?

In the community I built in, they had the same 2 framing crews all the time, same drywallers etc. Keeping staff in todays market seems to be the key to a decent home at the end of the day. I watched the process the whole way through and was impressed that they weren't cutting any corners on things most people wouldn't notice.

Check out some of their showhomes, the Cougar Ridge ones are pretty nice. And that's the same sort of quality I got in my house. I actually found the quality to be right up there when compared to most of the others I looked at. Now I've only seen their premier attached garage homes, so I can't speak about their cheaper non-garage ones.

Granted, the base price doesn't come with hardwood or granite, but the upgrades are actually pretty reasonable. We went with pergo laminate hardwood on the mainfloor, turned our 3rd bedroom into a massive ensuite with jetted tub, and did some tile upgrades and it made a huge difference on the feel of the house for not too much money.

For a first home when you don't want to be mortgage poor, I'd recommend them.
