Lightbulb TDI owners: The great VW TDI thread.

So I've started a new job, and I need to be driving 4-5 days a week all over Alberta. I've been mulling over a few choices for cars. On the short list are:

    Honda Civic Sedan
    Honda Fit (out soon) www.honda.ca/fit
    VW Golf TDI
    Toyota Yaris

So I've been looking at these cars for this criteria:

    1: Fuel Economy
    2: Interior cargo volume
3: Resale (gonna have to sell every 2 years or so to keep km's down)
    4: Fun to drive
5: Must be comfortable in the interior, (supportive seats ect.)
6: Base trim levels. (A/C, power windows ect)

So economy being my number one criteria, the Volkswagen TDI looks like a great choice as it's a hatch; has lots of cargo room, and could easily pull a motorcycle trailer with it's low end torque.

So I'd like your opinions on the TDI, what do you like about them, how reliable has your car been for you? I'd also like to hear about problems your cars have had and weather or not you've found them reliable!

Use this thread to post pics of modded TDIs, or up your favorite TDI sites/forums. I'd like to learn as much about the car as possible because a VW is probably the only car I haven't had any experience with owning..

    Thanks
    Bought not built!

There have been a bunch of threads on TDi's already but I'll post up my info quickly.

Black 2001 TDI: Has 160k on it now.
    Timing belt changed at 100k
Unexpected fixes: MAF Sensor - $80
Oil Changes: Every 16k with Castrol Synthetic and OEM filter.
Anything to complain about: Hells no.

MAF Sensor was a problem that happened with all MK4 VW's so that was not something that came as a surprise.
    Everything else has been fine.

We liked the car so much that my dad wanted another one....sold the 93' Pathfinder we had and bought a silver 2000 TDI with all the same options as the black one (GLS, leather, heated seats, CD Changer etc.).

Problems that the previous owner had with 2000 TDI:
Maf Sensor - was covered under warranty
Passenger Window fell in the door - was covered under warranty.
Car now has 140k on...ZERO problems in the year we have owned it.

Regarding Winter starts: It's been -30ish here in Saskatoon some days, have had NO problem starting. A little bit smokey right after start but that clears up in a couple seconds.

Record Mileage: Read the story of crazy mileage in this thread. Took a trip from Calgary to Kelowna AND BACK in one tank yo.
    BEAT THAT .
    http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.p...ht=got+mileage

    Any more questions just ask.
We don't have 2 TDI's in the garage for no reason......

    tdi's are slow

ok ok north american ones anyway. anyway, ya get a tdi, good mileage, and much better interiors then hondas.

mine is pretty modded, its all euro factory parts though, and i have 150whp and 270ish torque. i still get 850km per tank in the city, thats with hard driving. i could do 1000 if i tried, but its not worth it for the measily 150km, its only $4 more lol.

as for reliability, the only problems i've had were cause of autox and mods, if i had to do it all over again i would do it again.

This has already been discussed and posted by you in number of places (including Beyond). Unfortunately the videos are dead.

At the end of the day... you moved the needle and drove in 2nd gear to be able to make it look like you are redlining in 5th.

Bart, I didn't think they made a 2-door TDI, especially not with the MFA...
Did you swap all of that in, or am I wrong?

    Either way, get the golf

    1: 50MPG
    2: Who cares?
    3: Pretty Good
4: Turbo Diesel's are always fun.
5: Driver lumbar/seat back is broken haha.
    6: Heated rear window?

1986.5 Turbo Diesel Jetta, Pretty much mint body.
    400,000km's

    Mods,

    Massive Custom Injector nozzles.
    Aneroid fuel modification.
    No wategate! 35~ psi.
    Base timing advanced.
    Main Fueling Increased.
    EGT + BOOST gauges.

Fly's pretty good in 4th and 5th gear.

Fun car to drive, but what an electrical nightmare. All re-done though.

2 door golf tdi's are very rare, mine is the last year they made them with the new immobiliser. then all the parts, interior, exterior and 'go' mods i just order from europe. no aftermarket for me

Cool. I didn't think they ever made them....
I like having a 4-door, but I have a friend who was rather disappointed about not being able to get a 2-door.

    Was the MFA stock?
If not, I am interested in picking one up for my golf, do you happen to know where to get the clusters from?

    *sorry for hijacking*

Keep in mind that youll loose more money reselling the car every couple years then if you let the KMs pile up over 10-15 years and sell it for cheap.

I nearly bought a TDi near the end of last summer, cool cars for in their own right. Im actually fairly happy i didnt buy one tho, mostly personal reasons tho. If you like them and like the diesel motor then its the best car on your list.
