Are you trying to access the public IP from within your network? That won't work as it can't "bounce back" through the NAT on your router. If http://142.59.221.83:14789 is the actual address, it doesn't work for me from here...

You should only forward TCP, not UDP.

Try disabling the Windows Firewall, or checking its log. Check the router's log too.

What is the "name" of your Apache server? Attach the whole config if you like.

Are you sure that your public IP address is correct? I can't ping your IP (but maybe routers these days block that, can't remember). Easiest way to check is go to www.whatismyip.com

    Config looks fine.

Are you forwarding port 14789 on the WAN to port 14789 on the internal machine? Or are you translating between port numbers, either by accident or on purpose? TCP only?

    Check logs.

Telus blocks port 80, had the same problem a few years ago before I switched to Shaw. Make the switch and save yourself the hassle, Telus also cycles their IP so it'll change every so often and you'll have to reset your DNS. Shaw doesn't.

You do realize that you could host the forum from a web host like Dreamhost for under $10/month right?

Easier to do it yourself and it's free.....except for the electricity for the web server, which in all honest is probably more than $10 per month. But anyway, if you host it yourself you have complete access to the server, I've had headaches with remote hosting before because I couldn't make the necessary changes to the php.ini scripts.

Sure you can get some crappy shared hosting for $3/mo or why not get some "free" (ad-supported) space? o_0

If you want complete access, lease a dedicated box. They can be had for under $50/mo. With KVM/IP, PDU and monkeys you have full access, without the hassle of replacing broken hardware yourself and with proper connectivity/power/environment

    I have a 2wire 2700 HG-E gateway router/modem.
    Hardware Version: 2700-000536-005

And here is the user guide

    http://support.2wire.com/view/766/2700_User_Guide.pdf

Joey-Desktop is my hostname for my server PC.

SERVER is my user-defined application where it is forwarding port 14789 using TCP.

So I'm just trying to set up a web server for my web portfolio and I'm having the same issues. I have a dyndns account webhopping to my external IP address with port 14789. I've forwarded all my ports on my router to allow access on port 14789 and I've set my apache httpd.conf file to listen on port 14789 but it still doesn't work.

    help?
Are you trying to access it using the external URL/IP from the internal network? Most routers are set to disallow this.

The troubleshooting steps are very simple. Attempt to connect to private IP:port from another computer on the LAN. If that doesn't work you have a firewall/apache config issue. If it does work, then attempt to connect to the public IP:port from an external computer. If it doesn't work, then you have an issue with your router.

As others have said, the port you setup to forward to on the internal side (which you specified when you defined the application "SERVER") may be wrong.

I see, maybe I'll contact telus later today to see how I can port 14789 on the external side

So i got my networking friend to help me out and we finally got it working.

Conclusion is even though I forwarded the port on the 2wire router, it was still being blocked because of some other remote router. However, the public ip of my 2wire router was not my external ip(142.59.221.83). It was another private ip that was managed by telus(192.168.1.xx)

    so pretty much
    INTERNET --> (TELUS)192.168.xx.xx --> (2WIRE)172.16.xx.xx

    weird setup from telus

I appreciate all the help from all of you guys tried to help me out. Thanks!
