    Default Tipping for buffets?

As in relations to other thread 'tipping delivery guys'.

Do you or should you tip for all you can eat buffets? Considering you're getting your own meal?

Though there is service for refills of water and clearing of plates, that can be considered as service...

yea, i have always wondered this as well. Most of the time i tip a bit, unless i had almost/no service whatsoever.

I tip very little (like a buck or two) and I don't feel bad about it. If those people wanted more tips, they wouldn't work at a buffet.

Most people are pretty generous, at least where I work. Yes you are getting your own food but all the aspects of service are still there. In some cases we actually do more because people freaking pig out on buffets. We still have to check on the food, tell the kitchen to make more, etc. But it's up to the paying customer of course, if you think we are doing a good job, then tip, if not, don't tip.

I hate it when people say, oh I don't tip on buffets, ok fuck off, you didn't have to say that. Next time I'll leave your glasses empty and table full of plates.

I havent been to buffet in a long time. Last buffet I went to was the saddle dome one during stampede. I tipped $2 because 10% of my gst would have been something like 17 cents and that would have looked pitiful. It was good service though, so it was worth it. Damn good food too.

people usually tip 10% of there bill, not 10& of GST....or they could tip double GST (14%)...i have never heard of someone tipping 10% of GST...thats H-Kor lol

hahaha cheapskate :P 10% of gst hehehehe funny images go through my head when i read that.

my tips at buffets are based on how quickly we are seated, how packed it is, how quickly glasses are filled, etc. usualy its a basic 10% tip

Some cheap restaurants make tips part of the employees salary, and the tips make it a half decent living for the workers. I usually tip at least 10% even at buffets. But one of the places I don't tip is Calgary Court because the owners keep 100% of the tips.

I still tip at buffets. Even though its a buffet, you are still getting service. I usually go 15% at a buffet.

I have a newfound respect for waiters and waitresses! I had to help out with the buffet at MB Food Inc yesterday and MAN! was it a lot of work. Since I'm there more often I have ideas of the cheapos...and HELL NO was I going to refill their water or clear their table...they can GTFO!

I am not sympa towards ppl that work at Joeys or some other sub-par establishment when there is no crowd and they take their sweet ass time to take your order, bring your food etc. I have to qualms about not tipping that kind of service!

OO I've always hated this misconception about buffets that because you have to get your own food you shouldn't tip.
A buffet is often more work than a sit down dinner... more things to watch since plates are always empty and need to be taken away immediately.

Man after a few of these threads about tipping, I cant believe how absolutly 'welfareish' some people are. It's a few bucks, not a mortgage payment. Show some respect and tip your server/driver/stylist, etc etc, this is Canada, it's customary to tip, we're not in the Asia Pacific or Australia.

And Jeff, your comment about finding another job is ignorant. A lot of times restaurants are family run. Not everyone will just tell their family to "fuck off, I'm finding another job."

considering that the past 5-6 times we've been eating at the same buffet and the same lady has always been serving us (clearing plates, filling drinks) and doing a good job at it, we tip atleast 10-15% of the total bill

I've done it, and so has my brother. Just have to wait for my youngest brother to do it now!
