The first Top Gear was in 1977
Top Gear started in 1977 and was originally hosted by BBC anchorwoman Angela Rippon, although the show was initially not networked throughout Britain. Early presenters also included Noel Edmonds and William Woollard. The programme was 30 minutes long.

My god thats brilliant! They're paying in wierd money for 1989 too! How young do Jeremy and Tiff look? The car with the traffic thing in it looked like an xr4x4, nice motor, a friend of mine learned to drive in one the ass and had it as his first car

And I never knew Tiff was on top gear, anyone know why he left? or did he start fifth gear?

Tiff and Jeremy are actually best of buddies. Why Tiff, Quentin and Vicky left Top Gear was because when the old series was cancelled, Clarkson was perfectly happy going back to print journalism, but VBH, Quentin and Tiff wanted to stay on the air, so they approached an independant network (Five Network), worked out a deal, and got Fifth Gear.
It was the only motoring show for a year and a bit when, after HUGE public protest, Top Gear was redesigned, with help from Clarkson, from a pure reviews and info show (which is Fifth Gear now) into a fun romp-in-the-park show that it is today. Hammond, Clarkson and some fat dude were the first three hosts, and it went a season.
Fat dude didn't like his contract, so he walked off the show and James May was hired from print review in magazines to the show, and the show we know and love was born into it's current format. And now we have Clarkson, Hamster and Captain Slow, with occasional appearances by Sabine Schmitz (apparently there are rumors that she will "ring" a car every year, probably their car of the year, to see its lap time)
Fat dude must be kicking himself now as the average salary for a Top Gear presenter is somewhere in the range of 1.5-2 million pounds per year.
