I was wondering if SATA II hard drives are compatible with motherboards that only supports SATA. I couldn't find any information about it.

I believe it's like USB 1.1/2.0 - It'll work, but crippled.
Edit: Come to think of it, your VNF4U mobo supports SATAII anyway, Terence. Why do you ask?

I'm not fully certain whether my mobo is actually the Ultra edition or not, which is why I'm making sure that SATA II HDDs are backward compatible.
SATAII basically does nothing for sustained read/write performance. The quoted 300MB/s is a theoretical rate, even a WD Raptor won't make use of the 300MB/s.
But yes, it's 100% backwards compatible.
