I have used their new DV line for a couple days (loaner) (in slicks link) and the viewing angles on the LCD are absolutely terrible. You sit right in the centre of the screen, you will notice the edges darker than the centre. Move your head closer to the edges and that area becomes brighter LOL. And vertically, move your head 2cm and you will see just how bad the viewing angles are.

MacKenzie, dont mean to be rude, but Computer trends is not exactly the best/safest place to buy from. Ive known people who bought stuff from them awhile back, stuff goes wrong and they simply wont care once they get your money.

Go to memory express or order online and get a BUilt on ASUS> You want 14.1''? Get the Z63A. Its an amazing model. You can get it for about $1350. Custom build with what you want. The build on it is top notch, business line quality, and Compaq/HP wont even compare to them when it comes to this aspect. Compaqs feel very plasticky.

Besides I could have gotten you that same laptop for $1600-1700
When I picked up my DV1420, it was a great deal. $1100 shipped/taxes in for it. Viewing angles not as bad as you state, but who is really going to be watching movies on a 14" laptop when its not right in front of you? Spec wise, 1.6 now at 2.13 with the pin mod, 1 gig of ram, 80 gig, etc. Price was the main consideration, sure I could have gotten something alot better for $500 more, but where does it stop? If the budget wasn't around it would have been the new Asus 14.1" with a core duo and X1600, but I opted to buy one now and wait for the Core Duo 64's. It all depends on the person.

french model's only left when i ordered, but the french ones are 1200 instead of 1400. just install english software.
if the french characters or whatever bother you on the numbers at the top then you should be able to get some over lays for them.

mine should be here by tuesday or wednesday or thursday.
Just need a different OS. The keyboard layout isn't bad, all of the letters are in the correct locations, but a new english one will run you around $50 US shipped.

It's funny also, my laptop scored more or less identically to that one in PCmark04 without changing any of the power schemes. So much for a crappy HP

How's this? i was just playing around with the memx notebook quotes
    Base System : Asus Z71A Barebone Notebook w/ 15.4in WXGA Widecreen LCD 1 $699.95
    Processor : Intel Pentium M Processor 750, 1.86GHz, 533FSB w/ 2MB Cache 1 $309.95
Memory : Micron Original 1GB PC2700 DDR for Notebooks 2
    $299.90
    Hard Drives : Seagate 60GB Momentus 5400.2 Notebook HDD w/ 8MB Cache 1 $119.95
Network Cards : Onboard Intel 10/100 Ethernet Lan 1
    Video & Graphics : Onboard Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900 1
    Built-in Display : Built-in 15.4in WXGA Widescreen LCD Display 1

Probably slap on a seagate 300gb w/ vantec nexstar, along with some sort of external dvd drive
i just can't justify spending 180+tax on a burner for a laptop, or maybe that's the price they go for

You can prevent flaming (albeit barely) and get your explanation by reading this thread.
