    Default router with webserver

So how do I my router to work with my webserver?

I would like to make my webserver a static IP so that the DHCP server in my router doesn't realocate the IP number every 24 hours, effectively taking my server off the internet.

Evertime I make the computer static IP, I loose my internet.
Everytime I turn off the DHCP server, I loose my internet.

At one point, I left the DHCP server ON, and assigned a static IP that was outside the range of numbers assigned to the DHCP..........everything worked, but I still lost my internet after 24 hours.

Anyways, whats the general approach here? the linksys site didn't help me.

You need a static IP from your internet service provider. You can't just disable DHCP and make it static.

You can also use something like http://www.dyndns.com/.

Very good point, I actually knew about this. My IP address that telus assigns me is a dynamic address, too. So, I've created an account with dyndns rather than pay telus for a more money.

However, my problems are between the DHCP server (inside my router), and the internal network IP number that is assigned to my server. I've tried so many different things that didn't work, I am totally fucken confused.

I need someone to give me the general approach so I can go back and try it again.

for example my IT friend at work told me to keep the DHCP server ON to handle any new devices, but give the server a static IP that is outside the range of DHCP server. I tried this, and it seemed to work for a day or so, but then it stopped working, should I try it again(maybe this is the solution, but I am getting confused from a fluke power bump?) or should I try something else?

You need to configure the router and the webserver with the same static IP. If you leave the webserver on DHCP, it might pick up a dynamic address.

    But I could be wrong.

    Leave the Router on DHCP.
    Assuming your router is 192.168.1.1
Figure out that range it assigns. eg, 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200

Goto your server, and set it up with a static IP.

    IP: 192.168.1.225
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    DNS: 192.168.1.1

Then it should have internet, and never ask for another IP.

Thanks Alterac, I'll try that this evening.

Thats what worked best for me, but I think I was getting confused by some power bumps that were locking things up.

BTW, I guess that probably mean that I should spend $50 buck for a cheap UPS so the power bumps don't screw me up again.

    cheers!

what router do you have? wrt54-gs or a proper verision of G can allow for static dhcp and runs linux on the router, so you can do a whole bunch of funky things. Check out http://www.linksysinfo.org/

    Here's what worked:

    Left the Router on DHCP.
    my router is 192.168.1.1
the range it assigns. eg, 192.168.1.50 - 192.168.1.100

Then I set my server to 'static IP'

    IP: 192.168.1.150 ( i tried .255 and it didn't work)
Subnet: 255.255.240.0 (Router subnet mask as reported by my router)
Gateway: 192.168.1.1( As you reccomended, which is weird because my router tells me that the default gateway is 142.59.96.1)

DNS: 192.168.1.1 <- didn't use this. ( My server doesn't let me change the dns #, however, it shows that it is using the dns numbers that were assigned while I previously had the DHCP enabled on my server.)

End result: my server is accessable from the internet. and the internet is accessable from a browser on my server

    thanks Alterac
