Default Computer freezes with external HD?

Hey, well - I have been using this external hard-drive for a couple of months now. It is a "acomdata" brand 250 GB that attaches to the computer using USB, your pretty standard external hard drive, I'm guessing. Anyways, recently my computer totally freezes when I turn it on. It had never done it before, but now, when I turn the external drive on, the computer freezes and I have to shut it off, and turn off the external hard drive. The funny thing is, my brother has the exact same computer as me, cause we bought 2 of the same at the same time - and it works fine on his computer. So I cleared off my computer using those recovery discs that come with my computer, and it still freezes. But, works just fine with my brothers computer ... WTF? This BLOWS because I have so much shit on that harddrive (read: porno) that i need , and its for it to work on one computer and not the other, especially after one has been "reset" to factory, do you think the actual USB ports themselves have anything to do with it?

    Help! Thanks dudes.
    Until then ........

He stated that he tried it with his brothers computer, same specs, and it worked perfectly.

Read a little more about this, another forum suggest deleting all of the USB drivers from the Device manager, and then just erstarting and letting the computer re-discover them all, the person also had the same problem - where it worked fine on another computer, but not his particular one

    fuckage.

    oops, k

try using the usb ports on the back of ur computer, not the frontside ones (the wires may have fallen off ur mobo or may not have gone into the right pins when they were installed....

and yea try to delete the hard drive/usb drivers in device manager, restart, allow windows to reinstall usb drivers, then plug in the hard drive again and see if it works...

also check ur usb settings in ur bios, make sure everything is enabled and correctly set.

thats all i can really think of, hope it helps.

    Update:

    1. Tried uninstalling all of the USB devices and stuff, from Device Manager. Once that was done, I turned off the computer, started it up again and XP found all of the devices again. Then, I plugged in the hard drive and turned it back on. It froze solid as soon as I did.

    2. Uninstalled the USB stuff once again. Turned off computer. Plugged in harddrive and turned it on while the computer was off, then turned the computer back on. Found the devices and everything, and then froze solid. Thinking about just swapping my brothers computer for mine, hehe. Although, this is a shitty problem to be having! What the hell can I do?

It USB 2.0 enabled in the BIOS? I'd boot into the BIOS and just have a good look around for any settings that are errant.

I'd also go into device manager and scroll through the various components to check for IRQ conflicts, overloading of the USB power hub, and anything of that nature. Then I'd check individually to see if any of the drivers can be updated.

As it's a USB drive, I am assuming there is no jumper on the back, but if there is, make sure it's set correctly.

I imagine your Windows is up to date, but it couldn't hurt to see what's available for updates on the M$ site.

It's good that your USB drive works on another computer, that suggests that its exclusively a computer thing, not your drive.

Try doing a comparison between your brother's BIOS settings and your settings, and compare your brother's USB driver settings(if any) to your settings.

do you have any extra cards that your brother doesn't have? if so, take them out of your system for awhile, to see if that has any effect on your efforts.

If all else fails, I guess you could try an expansion card that has USB ports.
