Default JDM Imports Getting The Squeeze In Ontario

Looks like Ontario is suspending new registrations of imported JDM cars.

Maybe they will buy LHD Skylines so that they can stare at me from both sides while driving down Deerfoot (AB).

    Yah okay...

Hmm I was shocked when I read this, I do understand where the government is comming from though, it is bad for the economy. Originally they made the 15 year rule because they didn't want anybody importing vehicles from japan or anywhere else over seas. The government had no idea that when the right cars became available it would make such a huge impact on canadian society.
Ohnestly instead of banning all imports I think the government should use this to there advantage. they could develope there own brokerage of jdm vehicles and import them into canada for us or even have dealerships here that sell them etc.

Atleast that way the money wont be leaving our province and will infact be going back into the government for health care etc.

Either way I'm not going to fret it... Alberta can still import vehicles and that makes me happy!! we'll just have to see how things play out.

If they can just leave our rules inplace until the fall when I import my FD i'll be happy

That will never happen. These cars are mostly right hand drive. They are NOT made for our society. Period.

The law is there for collectors. It was not meant to be a way to import mass ammount of old JDM cars. They should and will likely move it to 25 years as a temporary solution.

This has got nothing to do with the impact on our society (which is virtually nil) and everything to do with who is importing these cars and what they are doing with them. Remember that Ontario has a hate on about illegal (street) racing. Who street races? Young guys. Who typically modifies their cars for more performance? Young guys. Who typically imports asian performance cars? Young guys. What do young guys often do with their modified and/or imported cars? Race them on the streets. Therefore, the theory is if you cut back on the number of modified and imported performance cars, which are generally far more car than most of the owners can responsibly handle, then you will reduce the amount of street racing and associated deaths, injuries, and property damage.

i've got nothing against RHD cars, i was thinking about them as a possibility when the day came for me to step out of my economy car, but i guess this just eliminates a few shopping options. no matter to me really.

The government shouldn't make rules for specific groups, like collectors, I think you'll find that the only difference between a collector and a car enthusiast is that a collector is rich. So when another class finds a way to use the rule, they have to shut the door on them.

If big business is threatened by it, maybe they should start making some more inspiring and affordable new cars. Heaven forbid these huge corporations that have enjoyed prosperity and growth for decades get some competition.

apparentely this isnt true. a lot of people aren't ansering phoen calls and other emails and mail. Hm i called them and everyone said they werent aware of this happening. If they put the 25 year rule on, it will be at least 5 years for it to actually roll in but it won.t The governments have much moe to worry about such as the oil crisis and thebooming economy in alberta. i might move there when im older.

Yes, for the past 3 years, I never had a problem. It's only 2 feet over, it's not difficult to deal with. Whether is may not be for you I can understand, but there is no safety concern. A good driver will drive well on both sides, meanwhile a lousy driver will crash on both sides.

Good. Props to Ontario. Hopefully Alberta will follow suit.
