Default Curious...Is an 850i/Ci's fuel economy REALLY that bad?

    Just wondering,
I've been hunting for a certain, rare car and stumbled across an 850, nice cool car, that's for sure.
But anyways, it got me thinking.
Is the fuel economy really that horrible? anybody have any numbers on it? I've looked, but failed.

It's virtually impossible to find a lower mileage clean one for anywhere near that.

    850i/Ci = same engine as 750i/iL

Yes they drink fuel like I drink pop + Captain Morgans Spiced. Yes they run a shitload better on premium then they do on regular.

Yes I only got a 735iL, but what I would do for an 850 *drool* I would love to bring one in from Jap for a little cheaper then here with lower milage, would be a nice weekend car.

Maintence costs on it would be fun for you . v12 means there are dual of most thing, one fuel pump goes, the other is right behind. One set of relays fails, the other is probably close as well. Same with anything else there is 2 of out there.

Not to mention if you don't have some sort of "buddy" in the car parts world, or a credit card + time, then you will be paying a very very nice price from the dealer for parts, not to mention most of the stuff is order from Germany, 2 weeks shipping if its not in Calgary or Vancouver.

For example, rear Self-Leveling struts for my car = $1700+ from Calgary BMW, per side. From the US, $1200 + shipping for 2. I got a whole writeup I posted on DTMpower about the local vs. online prices for BMW parts if you are interested in possible differences.

That's pretty much what i was expecting.
I knew it wouldn't be good to start off with, but was wondering if it was 36.5L/100kmh (Murci) bad, or just, bad in general.
I knew maintenance/upkeep was already bad.

Maintenance and upkeep goes along with any car, so don't worry about that.

Consider this - The smart car does 8L/100km.

If you want my honest opinion your better off buying a 840i if you want one...much cheaper than the V12 on maintenance.

Yes and much smaller engine, easier for the DIY guys to do! Although the v12 is damn smooth if its been maintained right.

    Very very Ture ..

however, it is why, 840i are much hardly to find, and their prices are much higher ..

Not hard to find a 850i, or early 90's 300/500SL for $20K .. but finding one for trouble free is tough ...

But 8 series just look damn nice, and ride so nice too ! ( as a 15+ yr old car! )

Being a packrat is a good thing sometimes!

This is from a 1993 brochure when I was considering this car when it came out. Sorry about the crappy handheld photo.

Fuel consumption is 20.4 L/100km, but it only needs regular!

Can you afford a $95 fill to go 440 city km?
