Default UPS question, UPS employees come an look

    So heres the deal

I bought some used Konis from the states, they came, I owed $90 cdn for them.
$11 of that was for GST and the rest was for UPS brokerage fees. (Approx figures, I dont have the invoice with me.)

So Today, I get the famous Brown guy again today, to deliver some sway bars. Except this time the Total is $29.

$9 was for gst, and the rest was for UPS again.

So, heres my question, the value of the goods were both approx $500 USD, any idea why one was so much more??

One was Used (KONIS) and the new ones cost less?

Is there brokerage fee based on where the item was manufactured?

duty is applied based on the country of manufacture. If it's made in North America, no duty applies because of NAFTA, but you still get dinged for the tax (and brokerage).

If you get the option, ship USPS. They charge much less for brokerage ($5 flat fee I believe).

If you call UPS, they are friendly and VERY helpful when it comes to this stuff. They will also tell you how much the shipping should be (so your vendor isn't ripping you off) and what the exact brokerage, COD, duty, etc fees will be.

UPS is messed up, I just had my first experiance with them.

I got a my used $45.93 dollar Sony Mini Disc player (finally after I paid 2 weeks ago), UPS charged me
    GST-$3.22 Brok Fee-$29.55 Brok GST-$2.07 total $34.84

so total value for my mini disc was $45.93 and I had to pay UPS $34.84 in fees.

    that is total crap.

you get charged 5% for products made outside north America. but I spoke to Canada Customs aswell and they told me for next time make sure to use a regular Postal service instead and to avoid using UPS as their charges are outrageous.

    hey thanks guys

I would love to use USPS

But some vendors have accounts with UPS and ONLY ship Via UPS.

I agree they are a scam, but there is no way USPS would have got me the box here in 4 days

^ I agree, but USPS got me my 2 boxes here (both fairly large, new headlights) in 5 business days. Shipped tuesday, arrived Monday. Customs was only 40 total. (Value = 800usd)

The duty rate is actually dependent on both the item type and country of manufacture. Shoes have a different rate than clothes and electronics, and I'm pretty positive Canada Customs gives preferential treatment to certain countries.

sry for bumping this thread but i just got dinged 20 bux for ups customs for hockey pucks. I know 20 bux isnt much, but what are my chances of getting at least half back from the seller as there was no mention of custom fees on the ebay ad.?

Customs fees are your responsibility, as they aren't a shipping cost, but more of a import cost. Well, they result from shipping... but it's hard to explain. Either way, they don't have to do that for you.
