Converting DVD+R to VCD?

I recorded some shows with my DVD recorder. My DVD player in my car can't play this format so I've been trying to convert it to a VCD, which it can read.

I tried Nero's burning rom to change the *.VOB files from the DVD+R to VCD files but I seem to only get like 52 seconds of video and sound but the file is over a gig big?

How do I get it to convert properly? What files should I be transferring and what program should I use? What format could I convert VOB files to before making a VCD? Can I convert to Mpeg or something?
