Default What's the appeal to stretched tires?

Can someone explain to me the appeal to stretched tires on rims?

I can't see any possible benefit to this trend, all I see is the following negative points:

    - less traction compared to proper sized/fitting tire
    - higher risk of damaging expensive rims
    - alignment gone to hell
    - possible suspension and body damage (in reference to deep dish rims that probably require spacers)

It lets you fit a wider rim and get some more dish, I guess. The actual handling effect it has, is to make the transition from grip to sliding very gradual and easier to handle. Could be preferable if you are just starting out drifting, maybe.

    but why?
if they have super wide rims, why not get tires to fit them? so the width was worth the price?

OP: I think its for wannabe ballers that cant fit the right size tire. Refer to the pic of the BMW. With proper sized tires it would hit the fender everytime he hit a bump. Its fucking retarded if you ask me. Function > Fashion. THats what racing is.

    You're all idiots. Here's why:

-stretched tires are far more resistant to sidewall rollover (I can use 25psi at auto-x and still have no rollover...not that I do, because the floppiness is annoying)

-stretched tires allow you to run wider, crazier looking wheels with less clearance issues. How? Well for example, a set of 8" wide wheels that would rub with 225 series tires might not with 215 series tires

    In response to this:

-not really. If you're a bad enough driver to curb your wheels, they're gonna be curbrashed regardless of the rim protector on the tires

-alignment is not affected by tire stretch, and even if it were, the solution is a $50 alignment

-stretched tires are used to PREVENT rubbing; I couldn't see how suspension damage would occur; and finally, deep dish low offset wheels don't require spacers, spacers are used to do the opposite, that is to push high offset wheels further out.

Hope that answers all your questions. BTW I think stretched tires look awesome:

Let's you fit a wider wheel and drop your car without rubbing.

I CANNOT stand fat tires. For example, on MK4 VW's there are lots of people running 265's on a 9.5" wide wheel...that is too wide IMO. I would personally run like a 235 or 245 MAX. Why? Because I would not want it to rub like crazy.

As for wrecking wheels I think it is really the driver that counts. As you can see from all the pics of my car I have not curbed or damaged my wheels. I really think that people running stretched rubber will curb/scratch their wheels LESS than people running "regular" sized tires simply because they are more attentive to their driving habits and stuff on the road.

Ignore the wheel gap...car is not close to being level

$$$$ wheels here. Poked and stretched + dropped like crazy (one of the lowest MK4's out there).

Most of you guys can't understand the look because you all drive Honda's.

Its the euro look, and its been done for a long time now. More DISH you have= more balla you are. Honda's can't take as much dish as RWD hence why it shows up on VW's and Bimmers.

Running the stretched look PREVENTS rubbing and would not damage suspension on otherwise tires that are wider. You have to appreciate stretched to like I suppose.

Poked means that the wheels "poke" past the fender. Ie: wheels/tires are past the fender line. Flush is good....but poke is better

The black GTI that I posted is a good example of this as well as the BMW in the first post.

    Another example:

IMO it looks VERY gay, i run 10" wheels so i can run 285 rubber... More rubber means more traction and thats a good thing.

If any of you guys think your getting better performance by streaching the rubber your on crack. and this look is no better than lame tail lights or coffee can mufflers. If you cant fit the tire dont run the rim

For the most part way streched is not my style. Sometimes (like nismodrifter) it works out great. Other times, like the first pic, it just looks to me like it doesn't fit. From a style perspective though, who gives a fuck what I think. It's not my car. If I was going to be crazy stylin though, I'd go for something like a 12-8 inch wheel. Meaning the dish would be 12 inches, but the actual mounting rim on the wheel would be 8 inches. Then I can run a 215 all streched over the 8 inches and not rub, and still have wheels sticking out of the fender by 4 inches. Or go michelin man style and have these big puffy inner tube sidewalls sticking way out. Yeah, people would hate, but then it would become a cool fad. The puffy sidewalls would be comfortable on the street, safe for the $$$ rims, and super rad on the drag strip where they would get taller with faster spinning like alcohol racers. Show AND go, yo!

It looks good, only on certain cars.
