Xenon lightbulbs

I may not be that smart when it comes to cars but I was wondering if its possible to buy Xenon bulbs and just install them into your headlights w/o having to buy the expensive kits? Like I could just go to crappy tire and buy a bunch of bulbs and replace 'em w/ the stock ones.. would it work fine if I did that?

yes, just get the size right
and if you buy really crappy ones ie. from crappy tire they might blow up in your housing
a nice pair of those bulbs (ie. piaa) can cost up to $130
and those 'expensive' kits can cost from just $329

^^ And to add to this...

The "PROPER" way to do HID's would be to retrofit projectors into a light housing. You could either use your OEM light housing, or buy aftermarket ones. The latter could cost anywhere between $500 to $1000 + your labour.
