I have no experience, but would like to start as a Roughneck sometime soon. I live in the Calgary area but will travel to wherever needed to work.
Anyone know of any opportunities?

there is no good reason for you not to have a job. I am also in Lethbridge,
go get your h2s at southern safety by the bingo building in the iundustrial park.
after that take a drive to medicine hat or Nisku and apply at every oil company, if you dont have the job within 1 day of driving around and applying, your doing something wrong.
So the best thing to do is to just show up at the companies offices and drop off resumes?
How much does the H2S course cost?
i took my h2s just of 32nd ave at the Albert Construction Safety
Association it was a all computer coarse took me about 1.5 to 2 hours
and only cost $42.50 and i scored 98% on the coarse i would
deffinatly reccomend looking them up they have a pretty good
place to eat too goodluck
yeah h2s is easy but most companies cover it from what i've heard. i already had mine paid for from a seismic crew before i went up to the rigs so that was good.
chances are zero experience you wont start as a roughneck, you'll be doing leasehand, which is easy enough. just be prepared to work :P
other than that, you can potentially move up really quickly, if you stick it out. aside from that, you might have a little bit of a tough time workin a rig on the summer since most of the drilling is shut down, (since most of the drilling is way up north with the ice highways and all that)
Anyway, good luck finding something for now, but dont expect to get a steady workload of 2 weeks on 1 week off untill things start to freeze over again. Cheers
sean
uhh about 1/2 of the rigs are running right now in alberta.
was enough for me to get a job in no time.
hs2 was lover 100$....check out southern safety's site for actual price.
yes, drive around and drop off resumes.
Eric G.
take whmis and cpr and as many safety courses, its sexy on your resume
Definately H2S, First Aid. Those are the big ones that if you already have then you are set. WHMIS is company specific you have to take it each time you switch companies, some don't make you or they hold a safety meeting and just give everyone it since its so damn easy.
And yes visiting places is the best way to get work. Better to see the person, shows you are interested.

A lot of the rigs are up and running right now, chaces are you will have no problems at all getting steady work of 2 weeks on, 1 week off, and most guys are actually working 3-4 weeks on and 1 week off if they want cus most rigs are short guys for their 3rd crew so yeah you won't have issues getting work!

Thats some of the most retarded advice I've ever heard, yea go get your H2S, but dont drive half way across Alberta and expect to be working right away Sure, you might get lucky, but thats a pretty big gamble and a pretty expensive trip if things dont work out.Originally posted by Audio_Rookie

Get your H2S, Make up a resume, and fax or email it out to these companys... Some will pay for your H2S and take it off your first cheque... Good luck.

Also, do all of the rigs require a piss test? And does anyone know of the stuff you can buy at bong shops really takes the marijuana out of your system (weeds the only thing that could make me fail, nothing else in my system).
Yeah i would never suggest for someone to take a cross alberta trip to find work but thought he said he was in calgary area so there Nabors and BJ and a lot of other companies who main offices are in calgary.Originally posted by Deville

Almost every one will probably do a piss test. And there are things you can get that will help you out in that, not sure of the names though.Originally posted by chatham

I guess thats why all the riggers i've know always stick to blow, leaves your system in under 48 hours or something like that. Little heads up for everyone.
-U
most places will start u out as a leasehand
No they dont always work. Had a friend who relied on one and failed. Best way to beat the test is have a clean sample with you but you gotta keep it warm or they'll know...Originally posted by chatham

You guys are talking like Nisku is a 12 day trek across arctic tundra. It's not that far away. Make it a day trip and all you're out is gas money.Originally posted by Unknown303
