What? Nissan? What??!?!
This is the second bit of incredible news in one day, the 47% hike in GM's sales in China was enough.. this is just great. WOW!! Hopefully some of Nissan's Skyline technology will trickle down to other GM cars... but who knows.. I'm sure glad !

have you ever noticed that Mazda is practically non-existant in terms of news or anything? Their is never any sales data about mazda at all, or any news about anything really; asides from upcoming models like the Kaburya (or however its spelt).. its almost as quiet as a manufacturer such as Fiat.

From what I read it seemed like they wanted an alliance so Carlso Ghosn can help them re-organize the company like he did with Nissan in the mid 90's. I also heard that Kirk Kerorkian is in favour of the alliance.
Rev high, ride low.
Kerkorian is the one that first suggested the alliance, then Nissan/Renault responded, GM had an emergency meeting, and now Nissan/Renault have responded again. the problem is that if they were to align, Ghosn in his patented buisness cost cutting ways, would close off tons of GM plants and then just have GM build cars based off of Nissans and Renaults. so not only would you have a bunch of pissed off GM workers, you'd also have tons of rebaged Nissans for sale. dont get me wrong, i'm not saying they build bad cars, the markeplace would just be flooded with too many similar products. thats just my view. i do agree that GM needs new management, but i dont know if Ghosn is the man for the job. I'd still like to see Roger Penske run GM.
I disagree with you there. Ghosn has much more experience on the global stage and in corporate restructuring. He has re-organized and breathed life into Nissan and Michelin in previous years. Penske owns numerous businesses but to no extent has the experience restructuring corporations. If any other person could restructure GM it would be Lee Iacocca. Plus Ghosn has his own cartoon in Japan.Originally posted by habsfan

Ghosn is a rock star in car industry. Many want him at the helm. This is definitely possitive news for GM in a long time.
Platform sharing would be cool and would reduce cost.
He's not afraid of criticism or consequences. If he wants it done, he'll get it done.
mayby nissan can take on some of GM's styling traits, that would be amazing

I sure as hell hope Nissan doesn't become another SAAB. Their new models are

Why Nissan...Why
because Renault owns Nissan

Renault / Nissan is a 'partnership'. renault owns 45% of nissan and nissan owns 15% of renault. the reason the 'partnership' works is they collaberate where it makes sense and work independently when it doesnt. This is different than enforcing across the board platforms or whatever it is everone else is doing so poorly. if you look at ownerships, they have been spectacularly unsucessful. (gm w/ saab - ford w/ Jaguar - BMW w/ Rover - DaimlerChrysler). Now D.C. has seen marked improvenment in the last few years, but it took 6-8 years of pain to make it happen.
if gm were to come in it could be a sucessful partnership allowing for a dominance in north america, europe and china. And considering the stockmarket value of renault alone is double that of gm, it could well happen.
