new drivers should be the BEST drivers on the road. if they are not they should not have been licensed. old people should not be on the road period.

cars of today>cars of yesterday yet the limits are still the same... hrm...hrm...

Exactly, all of them on deerfoot should say that. There's a few already in this thread who have already admitted they won't move over if there going over the speed limit in the left lane.

Apparently trying to play Hero is much safer even though its creating a log jam of tailgaters behind them.

Happens every morning on deerfoot when the majority of people want to go 120 and the few idiots will stay below 110 in the left lane refusing to move causing tailgating and people behind to make risky passes...usually in the far right lane.

If you wanna be a hero quit your day job and become a cop.

Are you guys in a parallel universe or what?
New drivers don't have experience and most of them are afraid of hiways. I'd love to have seniors banned from driving, but I don't make the rules. They have the right to drive and that's why most of them should KEEP RIGHT.
It's funny, I've been trained/tested/licensed to drive and driven for years in 4 different countries in 3 continents, and I can see a clear correlation between the how hard is the driving test and the quantity of accidents in the road... the harder it gets to get your license, the safest the roads are.

Having a sports car is especially important when you're parked on Deerfoot during rush hour. It gives you... ummm... character

Speeding is illegal for a reason... and it has nothing to do with a "hero" blocking the left lane to stop speeders because they are bad...

so? two wrongs dont make it right. if someone chooses to speed thats their problem if they get caught. you want to play by the rules? good for you. play by all of them. keep right. if the right hand lane has nothing blocking you from continuing at your chosen speed. stay in it.

No bro, is not about THEIR problem and getting caught, is about the negative consequences to others that your speeding might cause. I don't give a crap if you wear the seatbelt or not, I don't mind if you smoke inside your car, my concern is when the SpeedRacer wannabe can't control his man toy and then crashes with the seven seater carrying a family to a picninc. We are not alone in the road, doesn't make you sad seeing how many people gets killed or injured just because of others?
A few weeks ago my wife was 2 meters away from being killed when a cement truck tipped over after the driver jump a red light and took a sharp corner in the NE. She was doing nothing wrong and could have ended with a 35 ton truck on top of her car.
Just because a "professional" driver was confident enough to overspeed on his daily ride.
Sorry guys, I've probably witnessed too many road accidents/deaths in my life, speed seems to be a common factor in all of them.

lolwut? How is that defending slowpokes in the left lane? Funny you should mention it though: when glenmore west becomes a parking lot around SW/SE boundary, left lane is usually the slowest.

its funny how your example is a commercial vehicle.. not on a highway. could you please give me an example (where the evil speed is at fault) on a highway?

any speeding related accidents i have seen on highways are normally in winter... with an suv... upside down in a ditch. single vechicle, unless they have somehow had the momentum to get up the other side and into on coming traffic. but now we are not talking about someone that is going 20-30km faster than the slowest cars on the highway at the time...

    Absolutely true.

Calgary/Sask/Etc have some RUDE drivers for sure, but the most CLUELESS/DANGEROUS drivers are DEFINITELY on the Lower Mainland.

EVERY DAY I was on the road I had a near miss event where I had to brake hard/swere or honk the horn. In fact I started driving around with my hands on the horn in Vancouver - it was THAT bad.

Just going to leave this here.

Just because you want to go 130kms on deerfoot, does not mean that you are allowed to. People that choose to do so, put other drivers at risk, just as much as people that refuse to do more than 70kph.

The speed limit is just that, a limit, and to do over that, is illegal. Just because 20% of the people out there think they are Mario Andretti, does not mean they are.

As for old people not driving? That same Mario Andretti at age 72 would win me so much money betting on him over damn near everyone on Beyond. I say near everyone as i don't know how many top echelon professional road course drivers we have here...

In speaking with some highway patrol officers a long time ago, when the whole "slower traffic keep right" signs came in, they were put in place when not every vehicle could do the posted speed limits, and was implemented to reduce collisions. They were never a "it's ok to speed in the left lane" sign.

A better sign that maybe one should be using for the argument to speed in the left lane would be "keep right except to pass", but that would just be a huge clusterfuck with everyone changing lanes and speeding up and slowing down.

with how busy deerfoot trail is in the mornings, doing a bunch of lane changing is just not feasible. You want to save those 2-5 mins to get to work faster, leave 2-5 mins earlier.

You are aware that is a 4% difference? If I drive 30 minutes a day at 100km/h and do 110km/h, that saves me 15 minutes a week! No collisions either!

The slower traffic keep right rule on deerfoot makes no sense simply because the traffic density is too high. You might as well spend your time bitching about how the sky isn't blue enough for you for all the good it's going to do.

As many other people have said.... if there is someone coming up on you when you are in the left lane MOVE THE FUCK OVER!

Don't like people speeding? Let the police do their job. You are not the police, move the fuck over.

Yeah, that is about my take on it too.

Driving the limit or slower in the left lane is a fucking dick move, I don't care who you are or where you live. If you're not passing anyone, you shouldn't be in the left lane. Period.

I always love these arguments. They're soooo completely pointless. Ultimately, if I'm in front of you and you're not happy, then go around. If you can't go around, then most likely I can't get out of your way anyways. I'm under absolutely no obligation to move over here in Canada, because it's only a *suggestion*. It's NOT a law. So, ultimately, suck it up.

Now, that being said, I'm often the guy in the left lane that's passing most other traffic, but I don't let it bother me in the least if I have to go around. After all, I certainly wouldn't expect the leader in a race to move out of my way so I can pass, why would I ever expect that on the deerfoot?

Awwww... poor muffin. Go the fuck around, or slow the fuck down. It's people with attitudes like yours that are the problem, and gives Calgary drivers a shitty reputation.

It's one thing to be passing someone and then moving out of the way once you've completed your pass. It's another thing to sit in the left lane for no reason, day dreaming like a moron while scores of cars behind you are beginning to engage in dangerous manuevers to get around you because you are not paying attention to what's going on around you, which is something you are taught in driving school, to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

What's easier? Exercising common courtesy or having people pulling risky manuevers and getting all road ragey?

masoncgy, that is a bullshit argument. Changing lanes is a dangerous maneuver? If it's so damned dangerous for someone to go around then perhaps THAT driver shouldn't be on the road. I also love how you state, "out of the way".. who's way? Your way? My way? What makes you so damned special that you deserve to have a lane to yourself. Why does your way trump their way, or my way? Is it because you choose to break the speed limit and someone who's law abiding doing the speed limit won't accommodate you?

The way I see it, the real assholes are the ones who get all angry and "road ragey" because they have this ingrained sense of entitlement to do whatever the fuck they want, drive as fast as they want, and basically think they own the road. Just because those particular set of agitators choose to interpret "slower traffic keep right" as a god given commandment that allows them to speed as much as they like in the left lane, doesn't suddenly give them divine rights that magically trump the rights of every other driver on the road.
