spotted: comet or something
Im sorry it happened so quick that I couldnt take any pictures but it was a very cool sight. About 2 mins ago (11:30pm) I was sittin at my computer when I saw what I thought was a plane but it was quite a bit brighter and a bright ball, almost like a firework but was streaking horizontal across the sky. It was moving about the speed of a jet but it had pieces falling off.
Something I have never seen before, I doubt anyone else saw it? are these common occurances?

Yes...they happen all the time....just got to be looking at the right place at the right time.

I saw it too - I caught sight of it just as it broke up into about 8 chunks and faded out of sight.
Probably a small meteor entering the atmosphere. It seemed to be at very low altitude, but that is almost impossible to accurately gauge.
Pretty cool though! Glad someone else saw it too.

If you go into the country out of the city lights for a few hours you see several a night assuming the sky is clear.
Relax with some choice beverages around a campfire and enjoy the show.

Its nice to see them I've seen several over the yrs, but its always the same feeling.. Your not expecting it, then you see it , its over so quick it leaves you thinking, did I see that? damn that must have been a comet/meteor, then you wish you had of paid closer attention and knew it was comming.. ha
