    Default Test Computer

I'm playing with the idea to have a test server.
What do you think of the Xp 1600?

I'm really only using it to test linux / mirror applications to see if they work.

    I'm looking at the XP1600

It seems pretty affordable? Any opinions? (Yes, I know the board will be shit)

    Any opinions?

    http://techtronics.ca/pdf/flyer.pdf

I can build a better computer but I really don't want to spend $1500 (out of my own pocket).

If its not going to be your primary system it should be alright. That package is a decent price. The XP cpus tend to run a bit hot, so you may want to add an extra case fan to that system to keep it running smoothly.

Pretty much it'll be just that. I'll be hosting stuff off it and once I have the configurations down pack I'll move it to a real computer. In the end it will be a backup server.

Just playing with the idea if I should or not.

but I don't know if its worth shelling out the $ just to do some testing. I say save the $ and buy the real computer from the start and just borrow a computer to do compatibility testing.

I use VMWare to test applications and OS's. Highly recommended!

It looks very cool. But being a poor student that's out of my reach. Plus I have to feend my other addictions like racing...

Well, I'm going to price out a computer and see how much from my supplier. Funny how my server is much better than my outdate Celeron 300A - oC'd 504...

VMWare's a lot cheaper than a new PC. $100 I think for a student version.

We have an imac at work, none of us could figure out how to be productive with only one mouse button =).

I think if I spent some time on it, it'd be pretty easy to learn, assuming my brain can unlearn all the MS stuff that's burned in my head from the last 10 years.

haha true, we switch to normal PC mouse at work and at home. But yea nothing beats duel monitor on a mac. Personally it suits what I do much better then PC, but for sure there's stuff that definitely don't run as well on mac.. For one thing there's more games on PC hehehe

but yea took me a little while to get use to the mac when I first got it, there is a bit of learning curve to transfer from PC to mac... but once you figure out the system and teh flexiblity and usability of a mac its hard to go back. (for one thing I can specifically manage my application's Memory (I have 350 megs of ram dedicated to Aftereffect instead of having windows manage it in general.

I use a dual monitor 1600x1280 setup on my PC, along with a gig of ram, it's quite awesome for development work, video work, and IRC/forums work =).

I like PC's cuz they're so much cheaper than Macs, and you actually get a choice of manufacturer for every piece of hardware.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll price out a new workstation and see how that cost.

I need a computer as I want it to be on the net.
VMware does look to be cool to run as hard drives are pretty cheap... then again I'm cheap . Free is always better.

Nothing against imacs... But I'm old school. I like command line arguments. Point and Click is so boring...
Then again I'm brain washed with M$ crap... so what do I know.

Maybe one day I'll run Open BSD and see what the fuss is all about

How's the ikon board for server user load?

I'm running a simular configuration and it seems OK. Then again I don't see that I would have a user list beyond 200 people...

    War box sounds cool

    Solaris + FreeBSD = bulletproof

That's not to say I have never used linux in enterprise applications!
