Basejumpers jump from like 400m up and they seem to open their chutes in time too, so 1000m isn't unbelievable.
Haha since its in Africa? This is in South Africa, used to be a first world country when a white man was in power. It's as modern as any other country out there I assure you. I am south african, born and raised, and have gone skydiving there as well.

Lucky Lucky. That'd be such a trip! Thinking your gunna die, cuz ur chute doesn't deploy, slam the ground, then just get up! I'd start laughing my ass off hysterically.

This really is incredable, but remember, a tangled parachute offers more resistance then a brick.

This guy survived from 18,000', no parachute.

This woman survived from a skydiving accident even landing face first on concrete.

    B) Parachuters hit about 125 mph, or around 200km/hr. So if he was actually going 60km/hr, he must have had his chute pretty close to fully deployed.

While I would agree that its possible to live from falling @ 60km/hr, I just don't see how that could possibly happened from this situation. The facts just don't really add up, and I think this is either fake, or the reporter is embellishing quite a bit.

I hope someone can provide a good argument for this being real, but I want to know

why did the jump from 1/4 the usual height, especially if it was the guys 1st jump?
If the parachute didn't deploy, how come he travelled at only 60km/hr, instead of the usual 200 + km/hr?
And lastly, why do the numbers seem so made up? I mean come on, 60km/hr, 1000 metres, and 60 seconds? v=d/t, 60=1/(1/60), so there was no acceleration period? This just doesn't make any sense.

If it is real though, congratulations to that guy, he sure is one lucky son of a bitch.
Sky Diving is usually done from 4000m, these guys were parachuting, likely a static line jump which is typically done from no more 1000 or 1200m. Skydiving and Parachuting are differentiated by the "Free Fall" in Sky diving and static line jump of parachuting that has no free fall. As for the slower speed of impact, that chute although not properly deployed still creates a significant amount of drag (there is alot of material trailing you).

You are right the 1000 metres and 60 seconds with his estimated impact being at 60km/h isn't correct. He is obviously not a math major. For sure he hit at a somewhat higher speed.

    Hope that helps clarify.

Agreed. Alot of people think a chute dragging is no resistance hardly at all. Try running with a crumpled chute ony oru back.

Forget your chute not opening, this guy almost gets hit by a plane, or almost hits a plane, whatever way you want to look at it.

WOW, the story itself is not that amazing. But the comments that people are leaving.... People need to find out shit before they post.

    1000m fall -> Acceleration due to gravity 9.81 m/s^2

Therefore lots of time to hit 60 km/h or even way way faster.

    Terminal Velocity

With a closed chute and spread eagle you hit 200 km/h give or take. So with a tangled parachute its easily slowed down with air resistance.

With a frictionless suit and pointed head first down you can hit velocities of over 500 km/h. Just don't pull the chute at that speed. Slow down first.

Jacobs, a sales manager at Peri Wiehahn, said he was amazed when his parachute started spinning. "It was 75% open , but there was a rope over the top."
