Default Man survives 1KM fall out of plane

    http://www.news24.com/News24/South_A...985957,00.html

He was the third skydiver out of the plane, and the first to land.

Minor bruises, no broken bones. 1000M fall from the plane, calculated to about 60km/h at time of impact.

In contrast, that is 5x the height of the calgary tower, with injuries of a 1 story freefall. This man survives 1KM while others don't survive 3 stories.

So his parachute did open, it just got tangled and he smoked the ground. That's some luck.

Yeah its amazing how some people can turn out ok from things like this.. Theres a few stories out there of ppl surviving huge falls.. i think there was a woman or 2 from russia, flight attendants who lived thru a crash from 30 thousand if I remember right (inside the plane) may have seen that on myth busters

Yea. It got tangled, but he still went 6-8x faster than he'd fall in a parachute. Also, 60km/h is pretty fast...even for cars..which are made of metal.

Parachuters that freefall are about 80-120km/h depending on body shape/position....so it was close to a freefall. So making it without even a broken bone is nothing short of a miracle...people can't even jump 3 stories without breaking a bone/dying and that would be slower than 60km/h prob (don't feel like doing the physics lol)

You're right. 33,000 feet, her name was Vesna Vulovic.
She hit the ground (a snow bank) while still belted into her seat. Everyone else on board died.

I'm calling bullshit. Although I know nothing about skydiving, I did about 2 mins of research here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skydiving , and it says that A) parachuters usually drop from about 4000m, not 1000m
    B) Parachuters hit about 125 mph, or around 200km/hr. So if he was actually going 60km/hr, he must have had his chute pretty close to fully deployed.

While I would agree that its possible to live from falling @ 60km/hr, I just don't see how that could possibly happened from this situation. The facts just don't really add up, and I think this is either fake, or the reporter is embellishing quite a bit.

I hope someone can provide a good argument for this being real, but I want to know

why did the jump from 1/4 the usual height, especially if it was the guys 1st jump?
If the parachute didn't deploy, how come he travelled at only 60km/hr, instead of the usual 200 + km/hr?
And lastly, why do the numbers seem so made up? I mean come on, 60km/hr, 1000 metres, and 60 seconds? v=d/t, 60=1/(1/60), so there was no acceleration period? This just doesn't make any sense.

If it is real though, congratulations to that guy, he sure is one lucky son of a bitch.

That says the 'typical' height of skydiving. What if this wasn't a typical skydive...since it's in Africa mabey they didn't have any private aircraft that could travel to higher altitudes due to acessibility and budget restrictions. Basejumpers jump from like 400m up and they seem to open their chutes in time too, so 1000m isn't unbelievable.

If he started from 1000m, it would explain why he only hit 60km/h also, as he didn't have the distance to accelerate as much. And his chute was tangled and slowing him, but he still hit the ground 6-8x faster than the other guys.

Plus, not to mention Wiki is not always correct (since anyone can submit info), but I believe in this case it probably is.

Edit* Terminal velocity of that speed is hard to hit...you only hit it if you're spearheading head downward into the ground like a parachuting vet (which that guy wasn't.) And he obviosuly didn't reach terminal velocity if his chute was tangled and partly open.

I saw a documentry, and it showed people only hitting ~130-150 if you do spread eagle.
