Buying a used car - registration & plates?

OK if I bought a used car privately from somebody, of course we fill out the bill of sale to authorize transfer of the reg. What's the deal with plates? Obviously the seller will remove his from the vehicle and I won't have any plates until I head over to the registries office to obtain them. What are the rules in this instance, are you allowed a certain amount of time to get them? What happens if a cop stops you? I'll have the insurance slips but can the signed bill of sale be used as a temp registration? Just curious...

if you have another vehicle registered in your name, you can use the plates from that car for 14 days. Just make sure you have the bill of sale in the car with you incase you get pulled over, thats your proof that its been less than 14 days.

Interesting.... that's good to know. So I take it you must have plates on the vehicle before you can drive it anywhere.

Anyone know how the insurance works? Do you need to do the insurance for the car before, or will your insurance for your other car work? (Sorry for the bit of a thread hijack)

gota get seperate insurence, enless ur not planing on using the toehr car any more then u can switch the policy to another car/

Yup! This is true (although I'm not sure how many days you can do this) My dad picked up my younger brother a used car in a private sale and just put his plates on the car to drive it home...he was the only one who could drive the vehicle...then the next day he sold it to my brother for a buck and he got his own registration and insurance.

Just get the seller to drop the car off at yoru house and give him cab fare home.

Solves some headaches.
