    Default More Cops!!!!!

    Sheriffs patrol area highways

    By JACK WILSON
    Advocate staff
    Aug 29 2006

Six more officers will patrol Central Alberta highways beginning on Friday.

The newest crop of Alberta sheriffs have completed training and will be on patrol on several highways, including Hwys 11 and 22 through much of Central Alberta, Jill McCormick, a spokesperson for the Alberta Solicitor General’s Department, said on Monday.

She said 21 officers completed a five-week course and six, including a sergeant, will be on patrol in Central Alberta.

The new officers will be unveiled Friday in a Calgary ceremony.

Another 21 officers will begin training Sept. 5.

They are expected to be on duty by the Thanksgiving weekend on Oct. 9.

Two of the officers slated for Sept. 5 training are now working at the Red Deer Courthouse.

Nine officers are on duty at the courthouse providing security and prisoner escort.

McCormick didn’t have the exact number of officers from the Sept. 5 training who will be posted in Red Deer.

The sheriffs can issue tickets for traffic violations but can’t enforce the Criminal Code of Canada or become involved in high-speed pursuits.

The officers carry sidearms and are equipped with other gear including batons and mace.

The province has also received six new Harley-Davidson motorcycles to augment car patrols on the highways.

McCormick said no details have yet been worked out for deployment of the motorcycles.

The sheriffs are the second wave of officers to hit Alberta highways after a pilot program that saw officers patrolling Hwys 63 and 21 earlier this year in north Central Alberta.

Two other highways — 43 and 8 — will also be patrolled by the sheriffs.

The sheriffs won’t patrol Hwy 2, which is under the jurisdiction of the RCMP. The Mounties will also continue patrolling other highways.

Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko said earlier that he hopes to expand the patrol program next year.

Yeah there's so much crime committed on the highway, I'm sure glad our tax $ is going towards preventing it.

Nice to see the extra enforcement only problem is they cannot enforce the Criminal Code ie Impaired Driving. A lot of "routine" traffic stops often end with criminal charges being laid for drug trafficking or impaired driving. Having S/cst's perform this duty without the necessary authority can leave gaping holes in an otherwise solid Criminal Code case. I also find it ironic that these officers carry side-arms when other S/Cst's ie "county Mounties" are forbiden to carry a side-arm. The province should provide these officers with the necessary training and authority for criminal code violations and look at arming ANY officer who performs a traffic stop - law enforcements most dangerous task.

My understanding that this is the first step towards a Provincial Police Force. I believe they are working towards a fully functioning force, but are taking steps towards it instead of jumping right in.

It means there's better allocation of cops. If you let these sheriffs take care of the highway with mostly routine stops, then you free up more RCMP to do other work.

Not really, if these guys come across an impaired driver or drug offence they still have to call us. I think its great having more guys on the road, but like I said give them the authority, if not it burdens us even further.
They cannot legally search for drugs, or perform any kind of authority under the Criminal Code which we are also protected by. For years S/Cst's have enforced traffic laws but it makes it really difficult if they do not have the authority to perform the basic of duties.
Ie _ "hello sir I have stopped you for not wearing your seatbelt....oh whats that a Kilo of cocaine on the floor?....well anyways here is your ticket for the no-seatbelt infraction, and now I have to perform a citizens arrest on you for the drugs".
Then it goes to court...."Officer why did you arrest my client?"..........."really, and why did you perform a citizens arrest?'.........."dont you wear the uniform of a Peace Officer?"......................time delays, unathouried seraches.....case dismissed.
Let the Police do the work, or give the Sheriffs & S/Cst's the tools, equipment & authority they need to do the job properly.

From what I hear, CAPS/PPOs are in the running for the creation of a Provinical Police Force.

A cop that legally CANNOT get the "bad people" off the streets is a cop we don't need at all.

So why do they only get 5 weeks training as opposed to 6 months everyone receives?
